So I picked up 5 big band records from the thrift store, all originals from the 40's and 50's today. I'm successfully spending the rest of my evening listening to the greats while sipping down some black label.

And THAT'S how you spend a classy evening.

Now just looking for that classy dame.

Slainté!

I'm very happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Gil Evans had the best big band arrangements ever!

Evans wasn't on any of the records I got, but that's certainly up there on my list. I still have other thrift stores to go over :)

You need to have miles davis: kind of blue and in a silent way

also, get this [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Panthalassa-Music-Miles-Davis-1969-1974/dp/B0000062GA[/ame] brilliant tasteful remixes, even my dad really liked them and he's a pretty hardcore miles davis fan

edit: admittedly evans had nothing to do with those particular miles records i don't think, but heyy, the recommendation still stands :p

Actually, the list of guys who do tasty big band arrangements or arrangements in general is pretty large. Bob Brookmeyer, Don Ellis, Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones, even Lalo Schifrin has some snazzy stuff in his 60's and 70's score.
But yes, I mentioned Gil Evans 'cause I was listening to Miles Davis at that moment

That just reminds me that I own a drumstick of Jack DeJohnette that he gave
my mom like 40 years ago when he played around here with Miles.

Do NOT forget to listen to Harry James! I grew up listening to all this music because of my dad...and was lucky enough to find a wife that shares my love of this music.

Awesome. His stuff with Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock is always awesome. Also, my favorite John Scofield album, "Time on My Hands" has him on drums.
