Enslaved

I've learned to never start these "What album should I start with?" threads. You never get a straight answer and people end up arguing...lol

Qoppa, it depends on what your preferences are. Roughly speaking, if you like black metal, try any album up to Mardraum. If you also like some progressive stuff and clean vocals, try later albums like Below The Light or Ruun.

I don't understand the hype around Vikingligr Veldi. It's a well-written album and all, with excellent atmosphere but it's just so repetitive. Obviously a lot of black metal is reliant on a significant degree of repetition for the atmosphere but it's taken to the point of boredom. Frost and Hordanes Land hold up a lot better for me.

I usually start with a bands latest release. If I like that, then I will dig further into their past. Why start with dredging the past?

Oftentimes bands kind of suck after releasing lots of albums due to a lot of factors which are pretty similar in all kinds of art. So that's why.

indeed, Enslaved is one of the few i can think of that aged most excellently

Hot damn, still no consensus.

I'll probably grab Below the Lights. Staying away from a band's first or latest album seems to be a good idea for a first purchase.

Great choice. I would have said to start anywhere but then again my opinion is a bit biased since I love everything Enslaved has released.

The riffs aren't what changes. Do you understand the concept of ambient music at all?

I don't think he'd like the album more unless he did have magic speakers which insert extra riffs into the songs, so don't even bother. I don't get people disliking that album at all.

I didn't say I didn't like it. If I gave that impression earlier I didn't mean to. I think it's a good album but its excessive repetitiveness doesn't motivate me to replay it very often. I think in particular Hordanes Land is noticeably better overall, and while the songs on Hordanes Land are also based on repetition of a central theme, I feel that there's more development and variation of the theme than in VV. Although I do like the tone and feel of Vikingligr Veldi better.

I started with Blodhemn and Mardraum when they came out, then worked backwards through Eld, Frost, Vikingligr Veldi, Hordanes Land and Yggdrisal, and then Monumension came out. Fuck. And everything since then is history! Though recently I found the Nema demo, which was surprisingly good! Reminded me a little of Soulside Journey.

As for where to start now? No idea. Below The Lights is a bit more accessable than their other albums, but If you want to start in their progressive era, I'd recommend Isa or Monumension.

But they're a consistantly good band, so you really can't go wrong with whatever you get.
