If you keep a "horned fungus beetle" in a tupperware on your kitchen table overnight and thhroughout the following day, when you open the tupperware, it will


1) smell like rotten band-aids



Also the beetle will have died and turned completely charcoal black. Because of this, you can write with his face.
 
so if you have a whole lineup of them and open the containers at successively different times, would you have a palette of various bug colors or would they be just various litmus shades of green->charcoal?
 
I think the change is probably gradual. If it's not gradual and happens instantly, then I bet the color change makes a staccatoed fart/popping sound when it happens, like the sound violets make when they instantly sprout up from the ground.
