It's crazy to think that i've been down those roads and even climbed on that glacier (i think, can't remember exactly)

Volcanic lightning isn't very well understood, it's thought to be caused by the different compounds in the ash being ionised differently due to the heat. The different compounds have different aerodynamic properties which causes them to separate as the cloud moves with the hot air rising and the wind. This separation leads a HUGE potential difference. If the potential difference is great enough then the electricity arcs across the separation.
 
I hate how in the US CNN emphasizes that Iceland is suddenly dangerous to travel to because they have a history of volcanoes.

Last time I checked, their weren't any major accounts of casualties.
