I have 10"...12"...and 16" Pearl set of toms...maple wood I believe.

I've been trying, to no avail, to get them to sit in a mix without that "flabby-flat" tone. Tried using triggered samples but I'm still off. I was wonderin' if anybody would care to share, as to where the "frequencies" are that I should be looking for in say the 10"...then the 12" and so forth.
I figure they must each have a certain "sweet spot", but I'm goin' nowhere fast with it right now.....I'm using MH Channel Strip, so I know the plug isn't the culprit.

Thnx guys.

Have you tried gating/expanding them? Often I find that when toms are left to ring for too long, the low mids become hopelessly flooded and tubby sounding, especially during fills. Cutting them off quickly but smoothly can work wonders.
Otherwise, sweeping a high and very narrow band of parametric EQ through all the frequencies should help you find that "sweet spot"; when the "bad" sound jumps out at you, cut it. Sometimes, however, a good multiband comp is what's called for, especially if the offending frequencies only appear on the loudest hits.

Here's maybe a dumb question -- have they been tuned recently? Re-tuning the toms can work like magic on an otherwise seemingly hopeless drum mix. Also, what mics are you using?

I did'nt do the actual recording...so I don't know much as to what the set-up was at the time. I've decided to go ahead and use triggered samples on the whole kit and just leave the overheads....The band is quite impressed with Opeth's "Deliverance" drums....so am I!!
Should be interesting, to say the least....Thnx guys!!
