Loved The Matrix? Disappointed by Matrix Reloaded? You MUST rent 'Equilibrium.' This movie is SUPER. It came out last December at the same time as HP:CoS and LOTR:TTT, so no one noticed. But it's a gem of a movie.
Christian Bale is a cop who's in charge of keeping order in a post-WWIII society that has banned all emotion and feeling. People are required to take a daily dose of medication that suppresses all feeling. Bale's character is dedicated to stomping out people who refuse to take their drugs. Then he misses a dose, starts feeling things, and turns against the dictatorship he fought to prop up.
The common claim is that it borrows from 1984 and Farrenheit 451, but it strikes me as very close to Philip K. Dick's The Man Who Japed. The martial arts element is awesome. Bale's order are taught a form of tai chi that allows them to avoid bullets and disarm an enemy at the same time. There are some GREAT fight scenes, but the scene that's most memorable is between Bale and a puppy he saves. Pets, like the arts, are banned in this brave new world. Bale's acting is actually quite good, and you ladies will be happy to know he's shirtless again in this one.
I know there's a lot of sci fi fans here, so I say, get it, get it, get it. It's a gem.
