Even after all these years, this is still so incredible

I may be the only one who doesn't like S&M

I just think the orchestra doesn't fit Metallica, I don't like how the songs sound as a result.

There are only a few bands that I think really implement well real orchestra recordings in their music. I'm thinking especially of Septic Flesh.

EDIT : didn't see keregioz post. I feel less alone now :)

Nah I'm right there with ya. Always felt like the orchestration was just thrown on. Those songs were never intended to have it, so they didn't have the right arrangement and space to include the orchestra. It's a massive production fail IMO.

Mind you I was never a big Metallica fan. After disliking S&M I checked their back catalog and realized I had no love for the band in general.

Pretty much this.

There's so much shit like this out there that's just "metal with strings" rather than it being metal with the strings seamlessly integrated in to the utomost level at the compositional stage

edit: plus, "One" is already cheesy and hilarious enough already, it's unbearable with strings and Hetfield's pseudo-epic "HEUYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY"ing all over the place..
It's good for comedic value at least I suppose. Hah.

I did feel like a lot of the orchestrations on S&M were a bit much, but since "Outlaw Torn" really has very little going on normally (pretty simple, repetitive riffs and held chords), I thought it was awesome, and worked really well

that one leaf clover track or whatever was about the only one that gelled for me.

I bought S&M a few months after it came out and I still listen to it every now and then. Fucking awesome album.

Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me were both phenomenal performances all around and VASTLY improved over the studio versions.

This.

I love the whole album, but my favourite songs on there are the songs I wouldn't normally listen to by Metallica, because I think so much more has been added to them. While I still love the old songs they did on S&M, I'd rather watch them off the Live Shit: Binge and Purge DVD than the S&M performances, but there is just something about the Bleeding Me chorus off S&M that makes me feel amazing inside.
