Evergrey - In Search Of Truth
Inside Out Music America - 2001

By Graham Boyle

'Intelligent, dark and rich progressive-power metal, straight out of Gothenberg' is what the sticker on the shrink wrap says on this cd. For once the labelling is pretty much close to the mark. In Search Of Truth is the third album from the Swedish 5 piece, and their best yet.

Vocalist Tom Englund's raspy and emotive vocals lead the band through an album that offers a variety of different songs to keep the listener's attention. Whether it be over the sparsely arranged "State Of Paralysis", or the raging opener, "The Masterplan", or the progressiveness of "Mark Of the Triangle". The music itself is very hooky, each songs delivering strong guitar riffs played over some very atmospheric keyboards.

The album's nine songs are all well played and despite a somewhat lukewarm mix (the bass for most of the album is inaudible) and production courtesy of King Diamond guitarist, Andy LaRocque.

Evergrey are a band with a lot of substance to their music, and with the quality of this album, they almost have a unique sound of their own. In this genre of clones and riff-off bands, the best thing I can say about Evergrey is that they don't sound like anyone else. 5/5
