Evergrey - Torn

I have ignored you for a long time, but your holier than thou attitude/opinions are beginning to wear very thin.:ill:
I'm not quite sure what sort of response you'd like to this comment. Am I suppose to apologize? Promise to change? My opinion is what it is. If the way I state it rubs you the wrong way, there's little I can do about that. I'm not about to change who I am because someone I've never met has an unflattering opinion of me. Not everyone here is going to like everyone else. Such is life.

If memory serves, you and I have never met. Perhaps we'll have a chance to chat in September. I think you'll find I take very little in life seriously, least of all, my own opinion. Or perhaps you'll find I'm even more of an arrogant prick than you suspected. If so, we can agree to disagree.

Considering the 2nd grade mentality reflected in many posts made on this forum, I find Zod's posts to be relevant and interesting. Often times I disagree with him, other times I don't. But really, I'd take 100 more forumers like Zod over the influx of forumers who bring virtually no relevant discussion to the table.

Torn-Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However it does seem to be missing the wonderful choruses that just draw you into an Evergrey song. It is still a great listen, and I will buy it and listen to it till it breaks, when it comes out.

As for as the new Iced Earth- ALL HAIL THE RETURN OF MATT BARLOW!!!!!
The song "Come What May" may just be my new favorite song!
I can not wait for this album, and I can not wait to see them at PP!

And for sake of discussion..... What is album #1 of the year?

And any time you use that line, you need to finish with "Pucker up, Buttercup!!!"

Best album I have heard this year, by a large margin, is Paramount by Sieges Even.

I have listened to this little woman more than any other artist in 2008:

Give it a couple of minutes and you will see why...

Yikes! Your world's even more lonely than mine. :OMG:

Yes, it is. But that's not a problem.

I will say that "rules" is a bit of a stretch, but I was just following suit with your post. I really like Shadowlife (and the tour was awesome) but it will never come close to classic Dokken. Tooth And Nail will always be my favorite. (And for the record, I like both Nostradamus and Monday Morning Apocalypse as well, but I wouldn't say they "rule" either.)

Back on topic, I like what I have heard of Torn so far.

Good points. While I didn't like Shadowlife, Dokken were really good on that tour. "Rules" may be strong to describe MMA and Nostradamus, but hey....isn't it all about exaggeration on these boards?
I'm really looking forward to Torn. Definitely a "must buy" for me.

Torn is yet another sub par offering from Evergrey. However, this should surprise no one. Monday Morning Apocalypse had all the earmarks of a band looking to begin a transition from their trademark sound to something new. Bands only look to make such a transition when they've grown bored with what they had been doing. However, after the failure of MMA, Evergrey had no other option than to return to the formula they seemed eager to abandon. Consequently, Torn is paint-by-numbers Evergrey, that even during its strongest moments leaves the listener with a "been there, done that" feeling. There's nothing flat out awful here. However, there's also almost nothing compelling. And although Tom occasionally pours his heart out vocally and there's an inspired solo or two, the inescapable fact is that the songs fail to capture the listener's ear.

While I fully expect those who can't get enough of Evergrey's palm-muted riffing and Tom's soulful voice to rejoice and proclaim this a comeback album, I see no such victory. If you believe, as I do, that Evergrey's finest releases are In Search of Truth and Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy, than Torn represents four releases and seven years since Evergrey gave us something truly great. Since it will likely be another two years before Evergrey releases the follow-up to Torn, there will be nine years between that release and ISoT. And unfortunately, bands rarely go a decade between great releases.

Best post in this thread. Thanks, Zod.

I like "Broken Wings" a lot (been a fan of that song since I heard the riffs in the teaser trailers and studio reports) but after hearing the album on Myspace I think that I like "These Scars" the most so far... I love the added color that Carina brings to Evergrey songs... (I also think I hear her in Broken Wings although not features as prominently...)

I can't wait for my pre-order to arrive (and it better get here on 9/23 as promised because I'm on a plane to Atlanta the next day!) :)
