EVERGREY were in Paris last week, in an overcrowded small venue called Le Nouveau Casino. The Swedes brought a minimal stage production but it's always a pleasure to see them!
The new bass player is definitely more into live playing than his predecessor, otherwise Evergrey is still the tight unit we've come to know, lead by the energetic and charismatic Tom Englund.
I must admit that like a lot of fans I wasn't convinced by the latest record at first but after a few listens it's getting better and some of the new songs were a fairly good addition to their live set, like "Obedience" and "Still in the Water". However the best surprise for me was by far "Mark of the Triangle", YAY! What a wonderful song, so deep and emotional, I don't know why it's not considered as a classic yet! By the way it's pretty funny how the cover ballad "I'm Sorry" has become a fan favorite... probably the "Diamonds and Rust" syndrome
The dark and moving instrumental "When the Walls Go Down" is also a great idea to begin the encore, and "A Touch of Blessing" is one of the best metal songs ever IMO! I miss the dramatic "Nosferatu" though, and "The Masterplan" has become too predictable as set closer, it's always the last song with the same sing-a-long part every time I see them ...
A very good and almost intimate concert overall nevertheless, they even could have played a bigger venue.
