first of all let me begin by saying I am a huge extreme and nuno fan...

was listening to this album last few days and it just kicks so much ass. i wish there was some production info. III particularly is a great sounding album and the way the guitars are recorded are awesome, it really showcases the godlike rhythm chops of nuno. such groove and dynamics in his rhythm playing. i know he used ada mp1 preamps and various power amps and the majority of his tone was his hands and his guitar + the bill lawrence 500 pickups but to me the mics sound like royers.... the low end and cab resonance is amazing!!!

insight? thoughts? resources?

ps - the rest of the album sounds great too.

ps2 - great song showcasing rhythm chops and guitar tone

Allot of the low end probably comes from the fact that he is playing through vintage greenbacks.

On this album he dropped the ada as that was Wageners deal. This was a fender I believe. Huge Nuno fan, nobody has his groove.

whoa thanks...

and also, did he really drop ada?? i remember reading a while ago that he was unhappy with michael wagener about the sound of pornograffiti but i didn't know he dropped the adas...

what kinda fender is this i wonder?? sounds more like an extremely hotrodded 70s marshall head if anything. it has so much bite and pleasant fuzz but is still low gain enough to hear all the notes perfectly. i have a feeling the xl500 pickups naturally give that crazy sharp bite (like dimebag) but goddamn that's a nice tone if you're saying it's a fender.

Quick search tells me it was a Soldano Super Lead 60 Series II for rythm, and a Gallien Kruger for leads.
Its also said that he always had a ProCo Rat active in the chain.

is that the thread?

ps - i never personally agreed that the engineering and mixing were better on pornograffiti than on III. i think III sounds much more cleaner, in your face, and more "hi fi" the people over at GS like to kiss MW ass i guess i dunno.

Yes that is the óne. Allot of good reading there. I also thought the other records sounded as good as Pornog. just another sound thats all.

sorry but i had to say that that is one of the most epic and informative threads ever. they even have recall sheets and mic placements for that album lol (page 9) wow very very helpful. if every engineer shared like that it would be so helpful. crazy how the album was copy and pasted together (most of the extreme albums it seems) from demos, multiple recording sessions etc. etc.

gives the music a real human element in the sense that nothing was "traditional" and perfect. in the modern days now of swapping sessions and doing whacky stuff like programming kick and snare overdubbing overheads, have messy messy DAW session files, fixing things in the mix, doing crazy last minute things, overdubbing bad vocals or solos in the mastering room lol it gives you comfort knowing it was also dont at a time when supposedly everything was "big studio textbook operations"
