In my experience, yes. It takes a lot of practice and limb coordination, mainly to designate an independent role for each limb whilst keeping the big picture in mind. When playing a polyrythm the drummer must be able to focus on each limb individually without breaking the flow of whatever else is going on. If one isn't careful, it will sound like a mess, but played well its damn impressive and sounds really nice too.

This shit is Terry Bozzio, Marco Minnemann and Thomas Lang territory... they do the shit with groove in the middle of songs.
