Yes, TLTS is great. I was glad to hear that they're playing the style of that album again on The Dreadful Hours. The only thing I dislike about TDH is the production - the vocals seem to be too high in the mix and the drumming doesn't sound as crystal clear and hard as on TLATEOTW. I'm curious how the next one will be...

its pretty obvious what the me has as a fav mdb record[one of the best records ever by my account too] but... i really dig 34.788%..... cuz alot dont like that record and with the exception of heroine chic, that record is super amazing

I agree, and to be honest, I don't think there is a MDB CD I dislike. I think Like Gods of the Sun is also under rated. I think thats a brilliant CD as well.

like gods of the sun is underrated, was considered to be their sell out record by many but in all honesty, their isnt much comercial about it... tis just real good.... in me opinion...and im pretty right... like how vader is real good and is playing saturday and anyone who likes real good should go....

TA&TDR- first doom I ever heard, and still the best, a (literaly) life changing album :D

I love them all, although TDH has lost much of it's appeal over time, there are 3 tracks that I still think are awesome (TDH, Raven & the rose, My hope the destroyer), the rest I can do without.

I kinda feel the first album gets a bit ignored, which is a shame, there's some cool stuff on it, 'Erotic Literature' is one of my favourite songs of theirs.

Agreed totally. Its a good album, and it raises a point that I must rant about.....

I love the whole notion that people have, where a band starts writing songs with a more straightforward melodic structure to them, and people call it "commercial" LOL To me, commercial music is the type of music that appeals to a large mainstream audience, gets lots of radio and television airplay, and is written to acheive maximum financial gain and widespread acceptance. Bands like My Dying Bride, Sentenced, Anathema, Katatonia, etc., may have streamlined their sound somewhat into a less abrasive overall sound, but to say that these bands have "gone commercial" is just about the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. An album such as "Like Gods Of The Sun" has way too many dark and heavy elements to it to ever come close to being "commercial", and I dont think anything MDB ever does will ever earn them a million bucks and wind up on an 'MTV Party to Go' compilation.
I heard someone the other day say that bands like Anathema and My Dying Bride changed their sound because of the "lure of money". I'm telling this to all of you right now........if ANYONE actually thinks that bands such as these reap any real financial benefits from playing the music they do, you are sorely mistaken. If anyone in these bands truly had the desire to change in order to make cash, they'd be playing a very very different kind of music.
No matter how "poppy" you think the new Sentenced sounds, for example, I can guarantee that those guys will never be selling enough cds to buy themselves nice houses and fancy cars. And I am sure the guys in the band are aware of this too. They grow up, their tastes change musically, and they explore new avenues. Its as simple as that.
And on that note, I will say that I honestly think that the "34.788% complete" cd, while somewhat of a letdown in some ways, actually had some pretty fucking cool moments on it. The band tried something different, and it didnt quite work for them. But I never cried sell out at them, thats for certain.

i fully agree... a band following its own intrests and cuting the rough edges off their music gets called sellout way to often.. and if anathema can make alot of money someday making the amazing music they do now....i wont resent them...i think the word sellout is basically a useless word...like how do you justify that someone is giving up their integrity and their musical values cuz they wrote something that isnt an exact clone of what they used to do?????i gander you can call madonna or cher or someone like that somewhat of a sellout cuz all they seemingly do is glaum onto the latest trend, but being that both are already established...its just considered spreading their wings and becomeing more diverse....and im pretty sure anathema could make another silent enigma like record, or katatonia a brave murder day like record if they choose... my dying bride proved that they could go back and with lil to no fall off.....but the whole metalier than thou shit is annoying and is basically the reason i have been listening to nick cave and the bad seeds and the new tori amos record lately.... cuz metal kids take their music waaaaaaaaaaaaay more seriously and super tooooooo seriously than anyone else...lol some metal kids dont like me cuz i wear baggy pants and smile fer god fuckin sake....

in closing....stryper still rules, murder ballads by nick cave may now be the best record i have ever heard.....and metal,as much as i do honestly love it... bugs the death out of me sometimes

To be honest, it drives me nuts that Anathema haven't gotten some serious mainstream attention, I would've thought their last few albums were perfectly accessable to 'outsiders' (for lack of a better word), but it just hasn't happened :bah:

Similar sentiments also apply to recent Katatonia

Stupid mainstream people

You're all a bunch of sellouts! The whole lot of you!

I actually like the so called sellout/commercial music some of these bands are doing. It seems to me that people think if a band isn't playing a hundred miles an hour, they are trying to go commericial. Nuts to that. Katantonia creates an awesome atmosphere with their music. As does Sentenced and another favorite of mine, Amorphis. BEOTCH!!!

Amorphis fucking rule. I love that band. When we got to do shows with Amorphis and Opeth it was great. Alot of people dont like 'Tuonela' or 'Am Universum' but I think those are two of the best cds I have heard in the past ten years. As much as I liked 'Karelian Isthmus' and 'Tales from 1000 Lakes', I am glad they have evolved to where they are now. "Sell out" criers be damned! LOL

Actually those are the only two Amorphis albums I own..wait I take that back I also have Elegy....I also love the latter...and have of course heard the older albums as well. Amorphis has always been an A+ in my book:D

As far as the thread at hand....I personally am in love with The Dreadful Hours...though I do like the other MDB....depends what mood I am in..some of the stuff I have to listen to when I am in the mood to just completely chill and stare off into space..such as Like Gods Of the Sun...definitely not driving music, hehe.

Damn type-o's

I chose Turn Loose teh Swans, but The Light at teh End of the World is close. i still have yet to hear Like Gods of the Sun (although i've heard 2 from this one) and The Dreadful Hours.

and, yes, 34.788%...Complete is underrated.
