This thread is popping up everywhere, so I figured I may as well start one here too. List your top ten if you're not as poor as I am. Or just a little list like the one I'm going to post. Just a little something to let everyone know what you thought of the albums of 2012. ...And yes, this is partially just a way to gather info for my poor ass to avoid wasting money on a crap album. Partially. It'll be interesting to see everyone's lists.

Alright, I'm lazy and poor, so I've missed out on getting a few albums still (sad, I know) so I'm just going to do this by category with one album for each:

Album of the Year:
kamelot-silverthorn.jpg

A lot of people say this isn't a great album, but is rather just a "standard" Kamelot album. But there isn't really a "standard" Kamelot sound, they change from album to album - though, people are right, Silverthorn is a perfect example of baseline Kamelot. And to me, that was the whole point. They didn't want to pull a Nightwish by going in a completely different direction and allowing Tommy to take the blame for "changing" them. Instead they took a step back from Poetry toward their traditional sound and took bits and pieces from their older albums and put them all together on Silverthron, allowing Tommy to prove he can handle all their styles as well as Roy. It was the perfect move by them, I think. Nearly every song on Silverthorn harkens back to one of their previous albums and previous sounds, and that is what makes it shine. The music is lovely (definitely buy the special edition to get the instrumental CD) and the vocal melodies are superb - Tommy's versatility is really showcased here. It's exactly what I wanted them to do after having Roy leave. They held their position and created the quintessential Kamelot album, thereby proving to the fans that the only thing they lost was Roy himself, and that Kamelot is still going strong. Perfect.

The Good:
nightwish-imaginaerum.jpg

...I got mine in January, so I'm counting it for 2012. I'm still sad that Anette is gone, (They'll probably replace her with another screeching Soprano *shudder*) but if she had to go this was the album to leave as her NW legacy. Lovely low notes from her and a vast array of vocal styles and moods. Lovely. Way too many ballads for my taste, but they've grown on me considerably. ...But due to the customarily lame guitar work, (make that lame work from the band in its entirety) it is no match for the likes of Silverthorn. A solid "Good" for NW... Or rather for the London Orchestra, since they did all the non-vocal work... :bah: It's really starting to get old. I like these guys because the Orchestra is lovely, but the band doesn't to a damned thing and it's starting to be really lame... Poor Emppu is wasted on them. If only they could snag a good Contralto and learn how to blend the band with the orchestra instead of tip-toeing around it. ...If Sons of Season's or Seventh Wonder had released something in 2012 this album wouldn't have even been near the list, much less on it.

The Meh:
Eluveitie-Helvetios.jpg

It's not bad, but it's not Slania. That's about it actually, just, meh. A Rose for Epona is lovely though.

The Ugly:
xandria_cover|520|.jpg

...Okay, ugly is a strong word, it's technically not a bad album. Xandria has a special place in my heart, and this album is the reason I said what I did about Silverthorn - This is not the Xandria I love. They traded in their unique Indian vibe for the same sound used by so many Symphonic Metal bands. Call of the Wind (Because my Irish roots will not be ignored.), Euphoria (I have no idea why I waste time on Euphoria, the vocal lines just grab me for some reason, there's nothing special about the song otherwise.), and Nomad's Crown (Reminiscent of old Xandria) are the only tracks I bother with. This isn't a bad album in terms of quality, but it was a colossal disappointment for me.

The Unexpected:
image3.jpg

I'm not a huge Epica fan, due to Cookie Monster constantly coming in and interrupting poor Simone as she's trying to sing. (I actually saw a review on iTunes that also referred to him as "Cookie Monster" which really brightened my day.) And also due to Simone's voice being quite sharp for my taste. But I really like Requiem. It's a step up from their previous works, and, while not nearly my favorite album of the year, it's a solid piece and I'm happy with it. (Even though the cover art looks like it was ripped right out of the booklet from Kamelot's Poetry for the Poisoned...)

Too Lazy/Poor to Have Yet:
lacuna-coil-dark-adrenaline.jpg

Lacuna Coil tend to fluctuate a lot, I usually love them or hate them, but I'm looking forward to getting this album anyway. It can't be worse than Shallow Life...

EDIT: I just got this album yesterday, and I am very pleased with it. :)

Most Anticipated 2013 Album:
Seventh Wonder - Their last album is still one of the most listened to on my iPod, and I can't wait to hear what they do next. <- Big surprise right?

Without listing any runner-up's (ok, Silverthorn) here's my list. A short one:

Dynazty - Sultans of Sin
Sonata Arctica - Stones Grow Her Name
Van Halen - A Different Kind of Truth
Status Minor - Ouroboros
Elvenking - Era

Dynazty almost made it on my list too, but 2012 was such a strong year, lots of really good stuff didn't make the list in the end. :erk:

My personal top 10 list of favorite albums in 2012:

01. Kamelot - Silverthorn
02. Headspace- I Am Anonymous
03. Stone Sour - House of Gold & Bones Part I
04. Rush - Clockwork Angels
05. Europe - Bag Of Bones
06. Flying Colors - Flying Colors
07. Threshold - March Of Progress
08. Mostly Autumn - The Ghost Moon Orchestra
09. Slash ft. Myles Kennedy - Apocalyptic Love
10. Frequency Drift - ...laid to rest

In no particular order:

Kamelot: Silverthorn
Woods of Ypres: Woods 5
Katatonia: Dead End Kings
Poets of the Fall: Temple of Thought
Meshuggah: Koloss
Paradise Lost: Tragic Idol
Mnemic: Mnemesis
ORCumentary: Praise Gor-Nacular! EP

I have a feeling I missed a couple.

Disappointments of the year:

Elvenking - Era
Firewind - Few Against Many

Stone Sour - House Of Gold And Bones Part 1
Tremonti - All I Was
Kamelot - Silverthorn
Shinedown - Amaryllis
Circus Maximus - Nine

Stone Sour was my favourite of the year. I'd advise anyone to give it a listen, whether you're generally into their type of music or not, since I've seen pretty positive reactions to it from people who had never listened to the band or didn't really like them before. Tremonti was a close second, and the others are the other albums I liked enough to be worth mentioning.

Nice surprise for the year was Silverthorn. I wouldn't have been looking forward to a Kamelot album very much at the start of the year - I didn't think much of Poetry For The Poisoned, so it seemed like they were just a band that fluked a couple of albums I quite liked, rather than one I could be consistently a fan of. Obviously with Tommy joining them I was much more interested. In a way I'd perhaps say the album was a slight disappointment, if only because I ended up getting my hopes up for an album that would be even better than The Black Halo and Epica, which I don't think it is. But it far surpassed whatever expectations for a Kamelot album I'd have had before hearing Tommy was in it, and overall a very good album which rekindled my interest in that band, and was a chance to hear some of Tommy Karevik's great vocals earlier than expected.

Still, I'll be much more looking forward to hearing Tommy in 2013 :headbang:

Metal:

Kamelot - Torn (No video but i'm sure you've all heard it by now)

It just kicks ass. :) I was actually quite tired of it even before the album was released, since I'd played a sample of the song they put in one of their 'on the road' videos over and over, but after listening constantly to the rest of Silverthorn since release (every day!!! heellll yaa), it's starting to blast my nuts again now. yay:headbang:

I hope it's this song that they are working on a music video for. They said it'd be released early 2013. hurry up:Smokin:

^ It might be, it's a strong candidate I'm sure, but they'll likely do Song for Jolee first, to mix it up rather than doing hard-hard-ballad. It will likely be torn, or perhaps Solitaire - which is my pick, if only because if they make a video I'll finally be able to listen to it without picturing a ghost playing solitaire with another ghost pointing over his shoulder telling him where to move. Because in my sad, fractured little mind that is what it looks like when a pair of souls "join in solitaire."

I thought it would be Torn since they considered it as a single along with Sacrimony. But then again, it could be Veritas or My Confession. So many good songs. :zombie:
Not sure how they would do a video for Song for Jolee as they can't really rely on rocking and headbanging? Would it only feature Tommy or what... actually, something similar to the Love you to death video would work.

anyway, sorry, this is far off topic

The best for me (by far) is definitely Weather Systems. I played this album about 30 times and writing this makes me want to listen to it once more. There are a couple other albums that I really enjoyed, in no particular order:

Circus Maximus - Nine
Kaipa - Vittjar
Landmarq - Entertaining Angels
Marillion - Sounds That Can't Be Made
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Sybreed - God Is An Automaton

Yeah, SFJ wouldn't be the most exciting video, but it's a critical point on the album, and was the final push for Tommy being the new vocalist, so it's not likely that they'd snub it. It will probably be more passive, but I would love for them to go for a more artistic approach. :D They could do something truly lovely with that song, and I really hope they do.

There was not too much good music in 2012 (not as good as in previous years) to be honest, but we've got a few really good albums anyway.
