Favela of My Dismay
Inspired by the article in TCH and the fact that I'm currently listening to Storm perform folk metal without flummery on Moonfog's Crusade from the North compilation. Darkthrone, Satyricon, Wongraven, et al., exhibit metal colder than a gf's shoulder after a biscuit run, while Storm sends all hurdy gurdy fapping imitators to an early grave. An essential comp, even if you have all the respective albums of the bands contributing.

Fenriz's thoughts on folk metal and Storm, just for kicks:

"I was into pulling old, sad shepherd's songs and Norwegian/Swedish traditional music into the metal scene. I wish I never did. Folk metal should be deleted."

"We were idiots and didn't understand that folk and metal should never mix. I thought Skyclad was amusing and my own fling with folk metal too, but after it was done...oh brother. Folk is good. Metal is good. But together? No. It sounds too merry for phat fuzz and those of you who can't hear that must be lacking a chromosone or something. Isengard had at least something else to offer than pure folk metal, but Storm? I ain't touching that with a 666 foot pole."

my fave comps have to be:

fenriz has a point that storm is essentially stupid shit

#1 is PROJECTIONS OF A STAINED MIND (tiamat/mayhem/entombed/nirvana 2002/dismember/merciless/grotesque/unleashed/therion, i mean seriously!) on CBR from 1991

i'm also going to say IN THE EYES OF DEATH (tiamat/grave/unleashed/loudblast/asphyx) on century media also from around 1991, the WRONG AGAIN RECORDS comp. vol 1 (eucharist, katatonia, dissection, dark tranquillity, in flames, purgatorium, etc.) and NORDIC METAL - A TRIBUTE TO EURONYMOUS (i don't even need to fucking list all these bands) although i don't own this last one meself

Am I a liar if I say that the Swedes had the name before the seattlers but the latter got big and all of that?

If you wanna get technical about it there was some British psychedelic band called Nirvana that formed in 1967.

Also their original albums were re-released on CDs in the 1990s, along with two further albums "Secret Theatre" (1994), which compiled rare tracks and demos, and "Orange and Blue" (1996) which contained previously unreleased material, including a cover version of "Lithium" by the 90's Seattle band Nirvana. The original band had a case in court against them in 1992, but the quarrel was settled out-of-court, and both bands were allowed to continue using the name Nirvana.

I participated in a few noise comps. It's cool for underground shit, good way to spread the word amongst a community. They are good gateway drugs I suppose, but I can't say I have any real favourites.

cd compilations are dying or dead and i think it is a pity because sometimes they force you to check out bands you otherwise hadn't

i guess i'm getting old since i'm still not sure what "asf" means but thanx

I made a CD comp a few weeks ago for the woman, and a DVD-R with shittons of mp3 albums for a few friends just recently. Also, I'm currently burning a stack of CD-R albums for a coworker. Funny how making direct CD copies made me feel Old Skool. I need to bust out some high speed dubbing one of these days.

Storm is extremely tasteful, not the first time Fenriz has talked out of his ass. Anybody who still cares for folk metal (which is no longer RC fashionable it appears) would enjoy Storm's Nordavind. Ulver also thinks Bergtatt is childish. One can't look at a work based on the opinion of the author.

All true, but jollyfolk can go fuck itself.
