How can you not mention Vinnie Appice?!?
He defined the classic Dio sound.
How can you not mention Brian Downey?!?
He defined the classic Lizzy sound.
As they're not in those bands anymore, today's Lizzy and Dio ain't too exciting.
(Yes I know about Mr. Lynott and how could there ever be a Lizzy without him!)

Difficult question, but I thought Philthy Animal Taylor was great in Motorhead. He was as wild as Keith Moon (another favourite), if not wilder.
As for Saxon drummers, I think Pete Gill was the best. His style simply suited them better, he had more swing than the others. After all, he played on their best albums (Wheels, Law and Denim). The quality of the music went downhill after he left (was fired). I wonder how much he contributed to the song-writing...
Other great drummers: Ian Paice, Cozy Powell, Albert Bouchard, Tommy Aldridge, Dave Lombardo, Mikkey Dee.

I think that James Kottak is an axcelent drummer that well found his place in Scorpions. And whats more, he writes good lyrics to. he should not be forgotten, Check out his own project "Kottak". He is actually the lead singer in that band! and has his wife on drums.
Cozy Powell... he's still the greatest for me, and he even influenced me being a guitar player.
Stefan Kaufmann... love his style, prolly the hardest hitter
Scott travis... the machine. 'nuff said.
Kenny Aronoff... I wish he would do more stuff like Fused with Iommi and Hughes.

Nickos got such a great kick drum foot he has to be one of my favorites. He as well as Clive Burr are a huge part of Maidens sound. No simple 4/4 time just lots of fills and attitude. Cozy Powell to me holds a special place. I mean a lot of its Martin Birches production as well as playing...... but the MSG 2 Cd the drums are just so powerful. Also kudos to Carl Palmer of ELP and ASIA he is one of the best along with Rod Morgenstien of Winger. He used to play in the Dixie Dreggs and really smoked on those tunes.

Cozy, definetly. Not just one hell of a drummer but a great entertainer.
Neil Peart - A truly amazing drummer and percussionist.
Ian Paice - Despite his work with Purple, Whitesnake, Gary Moore, etc., incredibly a very underrated drummer, but in my book, one of the true greats.
Mick Tucker (The Sweet) - Forget all the glam rock bullshit!!! Check out the Sweet Fanny Adams, Desolation Boulevard and Give Us A Wink albums for a start to hear a really amazing drummer. As much as I'm a fan of Nigel Glockler, listen to the original Set Me Free (from Crusader) on ...Fanny Adams and be amazed.
Deen Castronova (Journey) - Saw him live recently and was totally blown away. What a drummer and a great vocalist. Sometimes when a drummer sings live, his drumming suffers a bit, not with this guy...believe me.
Bonham - No further comment needed!!!!
Nigel - Brilliant drummer. I agree with the others, although I think Pete Gill was amazing, Nigel's playing took the guys to another level.
Nicko McBrain - Something else entirely, and what a character. He's the best kick-drum specialist since Bonham.
Eric Carr (Kiss) - Phenomenal drummer who always had an amazing sound. A greatly missed performer.
Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy) - Awesome drummer who always amazed me by making it all look so easy.
Ted McKenna (SAHB/MSG) - Often overlooked and extremely underrated but what a powerhouse!!!
Chris Slade (AC/DC, The Firm, Manfred Mann, Asia etc.,) - Can play any style brilliantly and a really nice guy off stage.
Phil Rudd - Simple, uncomplicated style. Not flashy, but amazing to listen to and watch.
John Coghlan (Status Quo) - Similar to Phil Rudd. Fantastic drummer.
Rick Allen - Technically not the greatest drummer in the world but who cares. How he has gotten his life back together again and made himself a better musician and drummer. A true inspiration.

I forgot Rick Allen...Im sure there are a better drummers on this list that wouldnt have been able to come back and still play music professionally like he has.

Mike Portney (Dream Theater) made me realise that there are other mortals on this planet that can play as well as Peart!
Scott Rockenfield from 'Queensryche' is very versatile.
Brain from 'Primus' is like Stewart copeland on Acid!
Roger Taylor from 'Queen' could turn it on sometimes but was so inconsistant that I reckon Queen had about four different drummers!!

I miss him in this post... probably there are some better drummers, but I can say that he is the most exciting drummer I've ever seen on the stage. He seems to be a normal drummer but beyond that is like a devil!!!
