The decision was likely made due to cheerleading not having an official body of any kind. It all seems to be run by the Varsity company. The act of competitive cheerleading in itself has to be considered a sport, no doubt, but there are probably criteria to qualify it as such that we don't know of.

i didn't check the link, but this sucks for guy's sports, because now it means that due to title IX restrictions, schools that may have treated cheerleading as a sport before will now have to reduce the number of male sports/athletes to promote "gender equality"

If bashing one form of entertainment in favor of another, more care than that must be taken - I may not care for sports at all, but pretending that one isn't while failing to distinguish any way that it *shouldn't* be considered a sport is just sloppy.
