German rap-metal. There, now I've said it, I've probably scared away most of the hardcore metalheads who may have mistakenly wandered onto this page. That's what FiDGEt consists of, and you know what? They're actually damned good at it.

Considering that the only other band I can think of in Germany that do anything approaching the same style as FiDGEt is the considerably less-metallic band known as the Guano Apes, FiDGEt came as something of a revelation to me. I was previously under the impression that the Germans just insisted on churning out dour, cheerless gothic/industrial bands - I didn't realise some Germans had this much energy in them!

FiDGEt deal in fairly simplistic music - mosh-groove dynamics mixed with hip-hop breakdowns, rap invective coupled with metallic screeches, that sort of thing - but what sets them apart is the total conviction and flawless execution of their art. FiDGEt may seem a slightly bizarre title, but given their music's uncanny ability to instill the listener with an unreasonable amount of nervous energy, it is hugely appropriate. Darlene's rapid lyrical flows more than often layer a chunky, powerful riff, guiding it towards a crescendo that more than often ends with an explosion of energy and sound, before taking a bit of a break with a more mellow acoustic melody then coming full circle, right back into the fray.

They even know how to slow down a bit and touch softer emotions, too. 'Summer Decay' manages to sound heavy and melancholy at the same time, with an emotional chorus and softer interludes, before all the stored emotion overspills at the end and turns the song on it's head to become one of the most crushing tracks on the EP.

Well worth checking out.
