Final Breath - Mind Explosion
Nuclear Blast, 2002
by Perkele
A new thrash metal band from Germany. In fact, they were formed in 1993 and they started their career as a cover band. They released their first album Burnt Crucifixies in 2000 and received really good reviews where they were labeled as the 'fresh blood of thrash metal'. On the other hand, some said they were only an average thrash group emerging from the underground.
I tend to agree with the second opinion. This album doesn't contain too many surprises. What I like about this album is that these guys dared to play the music they like, basically old-school German thrash. They are influenced mainly by bands like Kreator and Sodom, but there's some aggressiveness from the Slayer vein too. Their thrash metal is varied with rhythm changes and some death metal elements. Unfortunately they had to change singers when Michael Imhof had problems with his voice, but Jürgen Aumann's vocals give fresh impulse to their music.
We can find some thrash hymns on the album like 'White Prison' that will make hardcore thrash fans happy. And we also find some slower songs with catchy heaviness, 'Killed By Lust' is an example. The above mentioned interesting rhythm changes are in 'Break Down', a song that also has some fast parts. Despite all of this variety, it falls to pieces. We also need to talk about 'To Live And To Die'. It might sound strange but this song has some wildness. We are going around the 37th minute of the album and even if we found the drum sound already boring this song gives the power back to the music. This is more dynamic and has more character than any other song on the album.
Mind Explosion will please the fan of German thrash metal, but otherwise I'd rather wait until their next work.
