I've always wondered how much thought a band put's into the final track of an album ? Alot of bands will put the best song at the end. Others the most creative song. Others just use fillers.

Opeth always has a great ending track. Epilogue, BWP, White Cluster, Isolation Yrs, BTPISIO & To Bid You Farewell are amazing tracks. Saving such great tracks until the end seems to be a risky idea. True fans of a band or genre will always listen to an entire album, but newer fans of a band might not make it that far.

When listening to a new album I always make sure I listen to the final track, even if the 1st few songs suck. With Opeth I don't have that problem.

The final track is of immense importance to me, as a listener. Openers & outros are what make a good album great - if I'm involved from the very first note to the last, even if what goes in between isn't all that amazing, an immense final track can leave me with a very contented satisfaction. Opeth are masters of this art.

Opeth has some big hits and some misses with their final tracks. I don't think White Cluster is a super coherant song. Weakness and BTPISIO are each the worst track on their respective albums.

Epilogue, BWP, and TBYF are as good as it gets though.

Ignorance.

that's pretty much right.

usually the first track is the best on opeth albums.

imo a final track should complete the thought of the album, or indicate the direction the band's music may take next. a conclusion, or a "preview" of sorts.

I kinda disagree with that. For me it's not true for any of the albums actually, maybe on Still Life though i find Moonlapse Vertigo and Godheads Lament are equal to The Moor.

Actually after I wrote that it came to my mind that the first track is amost always my second favourite. Not true to all albums ofcourse. But it's at least in top 3 for every album.

As for closers, the thread is about that after all. I'll have to say they are damn solid too. No problem with any of them.

Blackwater Park. Awesome Ending Track. But I don't seem to find alot of Opeth Ending Tracks to give me that .. weird feeling..

However, bands like Arch Enemy do. The ending to Saints And Sinners is a fucking classic.

I regard White Cluster and BRPISIO as the best tracks of their albums

If an album does not end well, it is just like a movie that does not end well. Everything is going great, but then you get thrown off by an ending that...

a. seems forced
b. does not do the beginning/middle justice

And that is a total bummer. And for the record, I think Opeth does a great job with closing tracks.

WC starts amazing then goes kinda empty then gets a bit better then ends pretty badly imo, shame because SL is amazing - white cluster is a great track but its just too patchy for my liking

Im not sure if anyone will agree, but i think Weakness is a great closer. Its so haunting and subtle... i dont think an album always needs to go out with a bang
