Ok, so I finally got a DI recording interface. And it's a Line 6 Tone Direct Gearbox/GOLD. Is this good? It was at a garage sale, works fine. I don't know if gearbox has good tones, and if it does how to do it correctly?
I see no reason why you couldn't get perfectly acceptable recordings out of a Line6 toneport.
Gearbox is based on the same technology as the pod so it won't sound that realistic but people can get very good tones with a lot of work. Best bet for guitars though is wagner sharp with TSS (tube screamer secret plugin) in front of it, run through impulses.
Hmm, the problem there though is I've found Line 6 drivers SUCK for low-latency recording in anything other than Gearbox (pops/clicks all over the place), so that probably rules out the TSS/Wagner/Impulses route (unless you can record monitoring through Gearbox but only recording the clean track).
I find I can get used to recording without monitoring through an amp or sim. No one else I've recorded can do it, but I guess they don't sit in there room playing to a click track all day haha
Oh staying in time isn't the issue for me, it's the little notes that might be ringing out or flubs that I wouldn't notice unless they were amplified/distorted
I use Asio4all drivers combined with stock line6 ones. So I can run 2 ASIO instances without a problem.
You can record some pretty decent stuff with the Gearbox, but nothing spectacular or comparable to a REAL amp IMHO.
