The metis were the children of European and Natives who mostly hung around the Red River valley area in Manitoba. A bunch of Scotts and Swiss (I think) decided to settle in the Red River and tried to fuck the Metis out of their trade and the Metis got pissed off and there was some pathetic little war (called the Pemmican War) that lasted for not a long time.
