I think that it's "this" but a lot of lyrics sites have "the".

Just listened to it and I must say I believe that Peter sings "Running from THE shadow".

Yeah, the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like The.
Either way, the reason why I asked it because i will prolly get "Running from this shadow Can I ever be free?" tattooed on me. I have to change The to This because it goes with the idea that I have for than quote.
