So after much procrastinating, it's time to spring for a preamp to add to my rack, which as of now only consists of my Furman power conditioner and Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56. I've been very happy with the Liquid Preamps so far, but when used with my SM7B for vox I really have to crank it up. I was going to get a pre when I bought the LS, but with the rack and reflection filter funds were a tight.
I've had my sights set on the Golden Age PRE-73 for months now, but never really decided whether it would be best to mod it at all through ZenPro Audio, and if so whether to do the Tantallum or Full Mod. The Full Mod racks it up to $600, which isn't bad at all (considering the word-of-mouth reviews and raves), but of course I'm always the skeptic and second-guesser.
I'm not 100% bound to the Golden Age though, but it seems to be that middle-of-the-road compromise considering that there's not much in the $500-$1,000 range (that I could find). Only kicker is it takes up half a rack space, and I'm not about to buy two just to fit it in my rack. Not that important, but my rack is looking mighty vacant right now
. Any suggestions, comments, profound wisdom, outlandish remarks? I'm really trying not to break around $800, but I can be somewhat flexible.
