THE talking car that effortlessly upstaged David Hasselhoff in the 1980s cult TV series Knight Rider will be up for sale in an internet auction this week.

The souped-up, 1983 black Pontiac Trans Am called KITT worked with Hasselhoff's character, Michael Knight, to crush crime and catch bad guys on the show which carried the tagline: "A young man set on revenge. His partner... an indestructible car".

KITT, or Knight Industry Two Thousand, was famous for witty repartee and offering Knight sober advice in a posh accent accompanied by sexy, red flashing lights.

Fans eager to own a piece of TV history will be able to bid for the icon on the auction website eBay on Friday.

It is estimated the car will fetch up to $US60,000 ($84,500).

Although KITT's showbiz career never progressed past Knight Rider, Hasselhoff became a household name as lifesaver Mitch Buchanan in the hit series Baywatch.

The bouffant-haired actor, who quit the series after ten years in 2000, has since followed the celebrity trend of starring in a West End show in London.

For the next three months Hasselhoff will play the role of Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago giving him a chance to exercise his dazzling vocal abilities.

'The Hoff'' has released a string of albums over the years, including Looking For Freedom, and Night Rider and has a loyal fan base particularly in Germany and the former Soviet bloc states. NEWS.com.au
