Yeah. IMO the top 3 messageboard forum software is:

Fusetalk: (Anandtech, G4TV)
vBulletin: (UM)
Invisionfree (not sure which sites use them)

PHPbb is good for a free board software, but adding decent features requires quite a bit of modification.
