For Ruin Last Light
Self Released - 2009
By Adam McAuley
This is a very competent melodic effort on the part of For Ruin. They have a melodic death metal style that is catchy, but has a lot of substance. Their sound is slightly different than the typical Gothenburg one, with some multi-layered density to the riffs present. The band also remind of other Irish greats Primordial somewhat with the folk nature of their music. The music is thus injected with a degree of authenticity and panache that elevates it a couple of notches. The manner the band blends together harmonies in the most appealing way possible is worth commending.
They recall the smooth flavour of the band Omnium Gatherum or perhaps Dark Tranquility somewhat. The music sounds straight from the heart, which makes it even more appealing and emotionally charged to a certain extent. The music is accessible, but not overly simple at the same time. It has enough interplay between the guitars to remain interesting. Melodies seep across the listeners veins in a pleasing fashion. The music has an ability to cheer you up with its mostly positive mindset. It isnt cheesy by any means, however and maintains great musical intensity throughout.
The band displays a great example of how to properly perform melodic death metal with all the musical ingredients coming together in a complete package. Last Light isnt perfectly performed in an altogether pristine manner, but does an efficient job of bringing addictive riffs to the forefront to captivate the listener. Compared to a lot of other melodic death metal, Last Light is an inspired performance. Absolutely recommended to fans of the melo-death genre in particular, but most metal fans that can appreciate good music should enjoy this.
