For those who loves Opeth Tone...

In studio they use Mesa Boogie amps, at least it's what I've read around here before.

GT-8s are great units to use in front of amps for live scenarios where you just want easy switching - for a band with the complexity of material that Opeth has, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to haul around a huge rack full of expensive tube gear and outboard processors. Opeth have been loyal to Laney even though I'm sure they could go with a more fashionable amp company endorsement at this stage in their career.

Laney is too cheap for him? ;)

Thanks for that.

It's important to emphasize that this is for his LIVE tone, which with all due respect to the great man, is nothing to get riled up over.

Those eight-foot-tall assholes made the White Rabbit sound good.

If you're ever in San Antonio I'll take you to a show there to demonstrate how much of a compliment that is, but in brief that's the shithole in the part of town that nobody ever wants to be in where every electrical unit fails arbitrarily and the sound depresses deaf people on a good day.

I remember talking to Mikael about his set up..

He uses the Laneys in the studio, but can't get that "sound" live on stage without it being overbearing.. so he uses the GT8.

Also, if his equipment goes down - he can import the settings (not sure if that's true?) into another unit and he doesn't have to worry about it changing from night to night..

Thanks for that link, I'll be reading that over and over..

It seems either Mike lies in order to promote Laney, Jens lies (can't see why he would) or Mike just doesn't know about the sneaky reamping that goes on when no one is looking.

Edit: Then again, Michael just said he uses them in studio. Never really said "it was the final amp tone on the album"

Jens Bogren disagrees ;)

From this thread

Wow, great information there..

I spoke to Mikael a couple years ago, the UK after Ghost.. was released. But, I see in that topic they were still using Marshalls in those sessions.

Thanks for that link.. All i can say is that I'm posting what I got told! :)

I am sure on Ghost Reveries, they used a Laney at some point. I read that somewhere on their site. Perhaps the studio diaries?. Mike even mentioned using a POD too.

Just cuz Mike says it on the band's website doesn't mean it's true ;) (and Dean, good point that it might've been "used" in the studio, even if it was never recorded hehehehe) Here's another gem from the Jens thread:

When I spoke with Mike A. on the Melloboat he mentioned something like he thought you used a 414 on a guitar cab during one of your bloodbath tracking sessions. Any truth in this? (He didn't seem all that positive to be honest.)

I've only done 1 Bloodbath album, and Michael was not involved. The latest one was done at F-Street by my employee David Castillo, and it's very possible he had a 414 in there. I used to have that, but i rarely used it much. Michael has absolutely no idea about those things, i promise you. :)

I agree that Opeth has a great live sound. The rhythm sound isn't the greatest, but the cleans and lead tones are some of the best I've heard by ANY band in a live setting.
