A Russian scientist claims to have created his own version of the fountain of youth. He says, when perfected, all you'll have to do is pop a pill to defy the aging process. The medicine is currently undergoing tests, but could be on sale within a few years. RT's Natalia Novikova has been finding out more.

It looks like an april fools joke... but it's not. This guy is crazy though. I wonder what Matt P think of it.

Right now I'm too hung over to watch any videos, but I will say that previous attempts at this stuff basically cause cancer to form all over the place. One of the main factors that causes aging is that a tiny bit of DNA gets chopped off at the very ends (called telomere) after it is duplicated for mitosis. The telomeres are pretty big but after so many generations, they start to run out of room. They tried to introduce a protein that repairs the telomeres but it just caused cancer to form, since that 'first line of defense' wasn't active

Interesting but misleading... oxidative damage is a part of aging but certainly isn't the only thing. Radiation from the environment, radiation from sunlight, simple physical damage, and other things contribute as well. I'd estimate this will definitely extend the lives of patients, but only time will tell how long, and what side effects it will have.

If it's legit, all I can say is, "I'm thankful it wasn't developed by a U.S. pharma conglomerate!" It would never see the light of day.

Seriously? "Pay cash to live longer... so you can keep paying for all your other medication and treatment." Sounds like its RIGHT up big pharma's alley.

Yeah , but not if it actually cures a lot of the things they would need meds for

Medicine has already cured a ton of diseases, and is working hard to eradicate as many as possible (polio?). It isn't that the **************s are suppressing cures, but that the remaining diseases are extremely difficult to cure.

Look at the top killers in America: Heart disease (mostly cured/prevented with exercise and diet; also, just plain old age), cancer (a hugely wide umbrella covering many specific cancers, each with different [often unknown] causes), stroke (caused by circulatory issues that are hugely exacerbated by lifestyle, and again, old age), Chronic lower respiratory diseases (smoking, anyone? also, elderly are much more vulnerable), and accidents (derp derp) are the top 5 reasons for fatality in America. (source)

Additionally, the only thing that has a greater occurrence of death now than ~50 years ago is cancer, with tuberculosis just about being eliminated and everything else being drastically reduced. (source)

The ************** industry is fucked in a lot of ways, but they're not totally evil. They'd release this... but they'd profit tremendously... as they should, given how much investment is required to research this shit.

The funny thing is, Pot works on a great deal of ailments, yet the pharma industry lobbies against it relentlessly. Why? Because it works! If you could grow your own, they'd lose billions.
Hell, the U.S. Pharma industry lobbied against "dangerous" Canadian generic prescription drugs being shipped into the U.S. ...What a fucking disgrace.

The sad truth is, they haven't cured anything for quite some time. They're all to happy to sell 'treatments' but 'cures' are unprofitable. Hence my original statement: If it's legit, and it was developed in the US, it would never see daylight. What good are healthy people to the drug pushers?
By 'drug pusher' i mean Pfizer, Glaxo Smith-Kleine, etc. etc.

I'll quote Bill Maher here:

"Ask your doctor if getting up off your ass is right for you!"

"Cures" are also a lot more difficult to develop than "treatments." Don't want this to turn into the classic debate over the whole ************** industry but I think that we can all to some extent agree with that statement.

I think Matt has it right here and you are missing the point somewhat Glenn. Pot is a terrible example b/c it has nothing to do with the Pharma industry holding back a product they've developed. The fact is that they would make a shitload of money off of a long life pill if it worked. In fact, if it does work I'll bet that one of the major players buys it from this guy before it ever hits market so they can make the money themselves.

Also, this "nothing gets cured anymore" argument is tired and misleading. What I think you mean are "there are no new vaccines for major killer" (except cervical cancer). There are new more powerful and targeted antibiotics every year-- they don't prevent diseases but they certainly cure them.

Exponential growth and s-curves explain why 'cure' discoveries are slowing down. We're at the top of an s-curve, waiting for the next big thing to be discovered, which will kick start off an entirely new s-curve, and rapid growth in these new areas will then take off. After a few generations of that, progress will again decline, until the next explosive discovery is made.
