Forlorn – Hybernation
Napalm Records – 2003
By Russell Garwood

Forlorn previously played viking metal, having begun life as a one man project. "Hybernation" [sic] marks quite a change from this sound of old, showcasing nine songs of cold, modern black metal, much in the vein of later Dimmu. The symphonics are relatively far back in the mix, but have enough of a presence to maintain a synthetic atmosphere, while the guitars are generally melodic, even to the point of using acoustics. The vocals have very little variation, relying on a death influenced Shagrath style growl, while heavily triggered yet well performed drums add to the cold, cynical feel present elsewhere.

"Hybernation" is a well-produced and technically proficient release. The band introduce relatively little variation in instrumentation and song-writing, which at times can lead to monotony, but in general the album holds your interest. Originality isn’t forthcoming, so if you’re looking for something new, Forlorn may be a group to avoid, but for those in search of some successful futuristic – if not groundbreaking – black metal, this album would be a good place to start.
