Freddie Mac CEO found dead in his apartment

I'd like to clarify two points:

1) Dude was the acting CFO

2) You aren't cold-hearted, you're a bleeding heart. An actual stone cold viewpoint looks like this:

People get exactly what they deserve. Suffering is the nature of human existence, and it is in the rational self interest of everyone to try and get what they can while they can. Those who succeed do so at the expense of others, and those who fail should have tried harder.

Now compare the Dead Winter argument:

"Shame on that child (who is inherently evil) for being born into privilege, which I and all other working class people would gladly lie, cheat, and steal to obtain for ourselves and our family. We wouldn't feel ashamed enough to kill ourselves though, because we were born with less and are therefore entitled to tear down those that were luckier."

Ok, so he's the Chief Financial Officer...it's even worse.

And I wasn't born into a working class family...I was born into an upper-middle class family which could now probably be considered upper class, at least before this economic downfall. But I was taught wrong from right and money never entered into the equation. I wasn't brought up with the mindset, "I'll get mine and you can starve for all I care". The whole golden rule thingy, you know? But in my opinion, the only thing the Bible ever got right was an eye for an eye.

Uh, wow. That's a pretty black and white thread there.

Dude's dead and suicide is a pretty hot topic for most. Ok, an apparent suicide. Right. He was found hanging in his basement so, short of someone poisoning him and then hanging him there. or tying him up and then hanging him there, he killed himself.

Whether we are embracing our inner socialist or our inner capitalist is irrelevent. The worst thing you've ever experienced is the worst thing you've ever experienced. It doesn't matter if your "worst thing" is as bad as your neighbors -- you're not your neighbor so yours is all you have. For some, it breaks them. Dissing someone elses pain is stupid. Sorry, it is. Even if they're a weenie-whiney-pee-pants-elitist-primadonna, it's still stupid because for them, it is still their pain. There's a reason why we have separate words for emotions and logic.

So is he a douche for killing himself? You don't know and you're not in a position to judge. We are trained to believe from the very beginning that it's always wrong and selfish, and I believe that almost every time it is. But how often are words like "always" and "never" truly accurate?

People are killing themselves left and right on accident to be thin or beautiful or young. Shall we hate them, too?

Frankly, all that hate seems like an unfortunate use of time and energy to me. But, you know, maybe that's just me. *shrugs*

Very true. I don't hate the guy, just that if he had as big of a hand as I assess that he did, I think he deserved it. Many people say all the time, "Oh why don't you just go kill yourself." Those are pretty powerful words, but when I say them, I mean it, unless of course I'm overtly joking.

Its not really the suicide that I was getting pissy about, it was the finger pointing without evidence.

He was the chief financial officer of the firm and was in line to get rewarded almost a million dollars for having a hand in demolishing our economy. It's not so much finger-pointing as it is basing a point of view on the facts presented.

Lots of ifs, however. I dunno, I'm just a sucker for retribution. I'd never hurt anyone intentionally, as I have a really, really powerful conscience. But when I see other people intentionally hurting someone without cause, whether it be financially, emotionally, or physically, I lose all sense of civility and want only the absolute worst retribution for them. The only time I don't have a conscience is when I feel someone deserves it, no matter how bad his/her punishment may be, self inflicted or not.

He was the acting CFO of the firm, replacing the guy that "resigned" for really screwing up. Arguably he was getting a huge bonus for having the balls to take on of the most hated positions in the world and try to fix it. But that is all speculation. I know nothing about the man or his work at Freddie Mac during his short tenure as CFO or his prior position as Controller.

I'm of the school of thought that says there are no good or bad people and nobody deserves any bad or is entitled to any good. You make your choices and you win or lose. If there is any kind of higher power, it shows no apparent interest in our actions.

Dead Winter, you are such an idiot. How can you blame only ONE guy for ruining the economy?? He got a huge bonus? SO? It was a contract--his pay--and both sides ought to carry it out. If it was a shitty contract for the government because it might not have provided him the incentive to act in the interest of the economy, then blame whoever wrote the contract.

And, I would also like to point out that Freddie Mac was generally a politically influenced institution, specializing in lending to poor people because that was the agenda of democrats in congress. So, if you are happy when this guy killed himself, then, you should be happy when Barney Frank and Chris Dodd also die, despite their populist approach to the bailouts.

And if you only blame CEOs for the financial crisis, then, again, you are in idiot. You can't pin point one grand source for the crisis. Most historical events are contingent; this one is no different. Other causes include Greenspan's relaxed monetary policy after the dot-com bust, high savings rates in China and other developing countries (which where poured into the American financial system, and then financed a vast expansion of credit), teaser rates for mortgages and credit cards, slow growth in Europe and Japan (the US's biggest export markets).

And finally, to expose your hateful idiocy, i have to reiterate what was pointed before that, he only had the job since september. The damage was mostly done in 2005-2006 and it didn't surface until late 2007 when it was perceived as a liquidity crisis--banks not having enough money to get over their short term debts--not as a systemic challenge to the financial system. We didn't know that until Lehman Brothers failed.

All your blustering can be answered with this:

Show me where I said ANYWHERE that he was the sole reason for ruining the economy, as you claim. If you really believe that I think that, you are a complete retard. "Holy shit I disagree with someone so I'm going to put words in their mouth because he says things I don't like!" Yes, the damage was done three years ago, so I guess he was still in college, huh? I guess he had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the shady dealings back in '06, right? Yeeeeaaaaaahhhhh. I don't believe it, but we'll see. You don't get appointed CFO of Freddie Mac without experience.

Wow, again, all I'm saying is that I believe the guy was dirty. If in fact he was, I don't pity him. We'll know in the upcoming weeks whether he was or he wasn't. Does that offend your sensibilities? Is that so outrageous that someone doesn't feel remorse for another's passing? Your tree's calling...it wants a hug.

Look, if the guy was depressed about the size of his penis and he offed himself, I'll eat crow. I don't believe that was the case, and if he really was dirty and unable to fess up to the public, then I'll actually be happy he killed himself. Don't like it? Don't take it out on me that I haven't mourned his passing.

LOL @ people getting so worked up over something that has no effect on them whatsoever.

I fully agree with that mindset. I just feel that you reap what you sow. Again, we won't know for sure until the investigation ends.

But I wouldn't kill myself because I had a shitty job but was raking in over a million per year, and I don't know many others who would either.

I'll make a deal with you. If all the acting CFOs and CEOs of the lending and insurance companies start to do swan dives off of the Empire State Building, I'll apologize profusely for premature judgement.

But seriously, is it really that bad if you're clearing over a million per year? It was either one of two things: family problems or guilt over this whole FM mess. I've got my money on the latter.

Welp, maybe he should've thought about all the other 5 year old kids left with a dim future and having to foot the bill of the bailouts aimed at people like him. He presided over the very company that ruined many lives and set the country back by decades financially, coupled with the fact that he was one of the people in line to get the executive bonuses.

It looks like he took that Senator's advice and killed himself instead of taking responsibility. My day is a little brighter now.

Fuck him. They'll live the rest of their lives in the lap of luxury, just as they always have up to this point. Meanwhile, millions of other families will be eating hand to mouth and working three jobs for 15 hours per day just to make ends meet, constantly juggling jobs. The only kids growing up without parents are these families, as they'll never see them because they'll be working like slaves for the rest of their lives.

His kid will grow up with servants in a well-to-do neighborhood, go to college at an Ivy League school, and grow up to be just like dad. Fuck them too.

I see what you're saying, but I didn't skim over the article. I read it.

And did you also know that he was in line for an $850,000 bonus to be taken from the bailout money?

This is purely speculation so you can throw shit at me all you want, but here's how I see it going down:

Dickhole here was in just as much shit from the economic collapse as everyone else, just in larger numbers. When he found out that the government was going to either take away or tax 90-100% of his lifeline, i.e., his bonus, he realized that he was no longer going to be able to observe the rest of the slaves from his ivory tower, and to make matters worse, he and his family was going to be forced to face reality and give up living in the lap of luxury, something he just couldn't bring upon himself or his family.

Let's not kid ourselves; this douchebag killed himself.

Now, it must be said that he wasn't the CEO during the entire hubub (he took over acting CEO only relatively recently), but he in fact was a top executive; a top executive in line for a hefty sum of taxpayer money. Guys, they don't pick people from the mailroom to be the CEO of one of the largest mortgage firms in the world. He had his hand in the cookie jar and he got caught and couldn't bring himself to take responsibility, so he offed himself.

It's just a theory, though. I could be wrong...but I doubt it.

Not all people on Wall Street are at fault for what happened, as the public seems to believe. But this guy was in THE firm that started it all. This wasn't some obscure lending firm whose CEO found out his wife was divorcing him and taking everything he had, so he decided he couldn't take it anymore and offed himself. 1 + 1 = 2.

You can think I'm a flaming asshole, coldhearted piece of shit if you want, I don't care. In fact, I hope others follow suit and weed out these thieves and let people who have a basic moral and ethical sense about them take over and try to repair the situation. Don't expect me to feel pity for this piece of shit. I'm sure there are about 100,000,000 other people in the US that would give their right arm to just be able to LOSE that kind of money, and I don't see 100,000,000 people offing themselves in light of this economic downturn. Nope, they're putting their head down and driving on, determined to fight their way through this, no matter how many jobs they have to take on or how many sacrifices they have to endure all because of people like this guy.

Ok, so he's the Chief Financial Officer...it's even worse.
