From The Start.........Denim And Leather.......

While it might not be in my Saxon top 10 (Actually, It isnt!) it does have a few tunes on it that i enjoy and that seem to come to life alot more when they were played live, Princess, Never surrender etc. The title track is thematically cool but not a song i would say i play often.

'Never surrender', 'Midnight Rider' and 'Princess of the night' are my favs on this album.....Thinking about it, i like the album more than i thought i did, i only have it on LP so have not heard it for ages (no record player anymore!)

The album cover is pretty dull and uninspiring stuff though :erk:

Well here we go again, Princess Of The Night, Never Surrender, Play It Loud, Denim & Leather, And The Bands Played On, Fire In The sky. What more do you want, all classics, all metal. Admitedly (that can't be how you spell that!! ) the production is a let down, but once again the band came out with a NWOBHM CLASSIC. The song Denim & Leather has got to be taken in context of when it was released, the lyrics describe EXACTLY my life back then!!! Listening to the radio every Friday night (T.Vance Radio I 1 rock show 10 - midnight, then Tom Russell, Radio Clyde Rock show Midnight - 2am!!) Reading the music mags from the back as that was where metal was put, gettin down to the front, quueing for tickets and we DID do it in the ice and snow, and of course the 'get up'. denim and Leather everywhere, it is a little audio documentry of a peice of metal history, I'm away to listen to it now once I've wiped the tears away, ahh the memories, where me feckin walkin' stick

Princess of the night and Denim and leather were 2 videos that ran on mtv when it (mtv) first started... it was my first exposure to Saxon... hard core fan ever since... they opened for Molly Hatchet in San Antonio (I thought it was late 81, might have been early 82) ...that was my first concert experience and it was great... I think this album is top shelf... there really isn't a bad song on the album - in fact they are all excellent - and as far as "production quality" is concerned, does it really matter when you are banging your head harder than Angus Young having an epileptic seizure with all the knobs turned up to 11? (which is probably the "proper" way to listen afterall...)

Denim and Leather is the quintessential head banger- flat out perfection

Is this where it all started to go wrong for Saxon? I must admit I have never particularly liked this album. For me this is where Saxon started to turn to the American influence, and it started to go downhill. But having said that, there are some classic Saxon songs on this album - Denim & Leather, Bands Played On, Princess Of The Night. But I never really liked Midnight Rider, Play It Loud, and Out Of Control. But having seen Saxon perform 'Play It Loud' recently, I gave the album another listen, and I quite liked it! But it never was one of my favourites, and it never will be.

Thats the thing with Saxon songs like Out Of Control and Play It Loud sound a bit tired on the album but like Pax says Play It Loud was fucking great live.
Like all Saxon albus it has never been remastered with bonus material.I think this album would benifit more than most from that kind of treatment.

as pax said play it loud rocked in nottingham and bradford, the thing about saxon is quite simple....... they are good at what they do , they are not the kinda people who have forgotten there fans no matter how dispersed we became , not forgotten there roots, and not forgotten how music should be played both live and recorded............. I wish that other bands ( and you all know who they are !!!!) had the same morals and feelings for us fans and not a love of the yankee dollar

Hey TSYKES,who couldnt get enough yankee dollars so they went and invented their own currency? What the fuck is a euro worth anyway.I enjoy Saxon just as much as all of you,but how about all of the videos where they tried to be American cowboys.Talk about a sellout. That shit is laughable.Steve

If you had took the time to understand his post it is quite clear (to me at least) that he is not insulting America or the almighty dollar but merely pointing out that Saxon are a band that have always stood their ground and stood by their fans (no matter where in the world they may be from) and have not chased after some other grand illusion or pot of gold at the end of a non existant rainbow by selling out the music they play and trying to appeal to a particular audience at a particular time, which most bands have done at some time or another by finding ways to somehow Americanise themselves in order to become big in america for the sake of tons of money and popularity etc. (I dont blame the bands who do really, i mean, who would not want that stuff!)

And are you really interested in 'what the fuck the euro is worth' i know im not, but here is the current exchange rate vs usd

1.00 EUR Euro = 1.17717 USD United States Dollars

As i said the guy made a valid point in my opinion and meant no offence, and neither do i, had he wanted to insult the usa for whatever reason he could of mentioned how Saxon unfortunately had to postpone the us tour, that would of been out of order.....

Or...He could of been a bastard and posted something like:

Are Americans Stupid?

Are Americans Stupid? Yep, this is a page about the country with the old red, white & blue. No, not the UK, or France. But the USA. Now, if you visited this page without already knowing the answer, you must be American. Just to make it clear, my definition of "stupid" has nothing to do with qualifications, etc. but, put simply common sense, or rather, lack of it. Americans, on the whole, almost (?) completely lack common sense. But, if you're not convinced, here's the proof:
  1. Which Nation spent millions of dollars to send two men to the moon, then sent 10 more people, before they realised it was just a barren rock?
  2. In which country do chainsaw manufactures find it necessary to put disclaimers like "do not attempt to stop the saw whilst it is activated with your hands." AND, get taken to court by a man who tried to stop a chainsaw with his hand because it didn't say not to in the manual (which, for those American's amongst you, it did). What makes this story really ironic was that when the brand of chainsaw manufacturers first release there chainsaws in America, it was noticed that it was significantly larger than the original, because of things like the aforementioned warnings, in fact there was even an story on it on American TV news. They thought it was very funny that the manufactures thought that they were so stupid they needed these warnings. Strangely, there was little in the news about the court case that followed.
  3. How about the American that phoned up his computer manufacturer to say that his cup-holder had broken? "Cup-holder? What cup holder??" "Well, you push a button on the front and it comes out. And when I put a cup of coffee in it, it broke." Once again, for the yanks; It was actually his CD drive. Duh.
  4. Who has to write "London, England" along the bottom of all their films when they show a shot of Big Ben, or "Paris, France" when shown a picture of the Eiffel Tower?
  5. Which country makes you fill in a questionnaire asking questions like "were you in or around the area of Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945?" Or "are you entering the United States with the intent of committing criminal or terrorist activities?" Before granting a Visa?
  6. In what country would a person invent a new sport, then think to himself "I know, I'll give this sport the same name as another sport, even though it is far less appropriate for this sport than the other sport, which already has the name."
  7. On the subject of sport, the "World series" which only Americans are allowed to enter.
  8. Who thought "I know, lets invent a weapon that is so powerful, there is no way to defend against it, that's powerful enough to destroy whole cities in one go." Oh, and "that will make the area unfit for habitation for years after it has been used, and, in fact will end up giving people in this country cancer, and other unpleasant diseases."???? Eh?
  9. "Duck and cover."
  10. When shop assistants, or maybe people working at Mac Donald's come and ask "may I help you sir?" or whatever, only in America do you really get the feeling that the person really would like to help you. Rather than anything else they could be doing, they would prefer to be right there, helping you.
  11. All Dollar notes are the same, except for the number, meaning that it's impossible for blind people to tell them apart. Also, what is a "Dime" worth? It doesn't say on the coin. Are you somehow just supposed to know? Is it obvious? It isn't to me...
You see my point? and yeah the whole Saxon dressed as cowboys etc. was'nt their finest hour as far as videos go, although 'Innocence' is one of my fav Saxon albums!

btw. my dad married an american woman and now lives there, so call me bitter and twisted!! Which i am and proud of! and the above stuff was copied from this site http://www.romankoch.ch/lachhaft/stupidamericans.htm

Hey Valanx, great job.Way to set him straight. I know why I love message boards. As I read your post I was thinking where does this guy come up with this. F##ing Great.

Denim and Leather...Forever:hotjump:

My apologies boys, what makes us Americans sometimes stoopid is a tendancy to let emotions cloud thinking.Remember history puts us both on the same side time and time again.Again, please accept my apologies.I have a very long history with music.I saw the Beatles in 64,Led Zep in 80,and in between many fine English and European bands like Maiden,Priest, UFO,U2,Police,Clash,Talking Heads,Def Leppard,MSG,ect.I have a soft spot for European rock and always will.Oh yeah, dont forget ACDC and Saxon too.Steve

Denim and Leather brought us all together. My number one cd from the band. Every song is a classic and it still sounds good blasting from the car stereo. I don't think the transfer was as good as the two previous cds and Pete Gills drumming on a few parts on my fave anthem Play it Loud is questionable. To me this was their Back In Black. Solid all the way through.

:hotjump: :hotjump: Play it Loud in your neighbourhood, it doesn't get better than this.

Thats very true, cool mate! so... what do you think of 'denim and leather' then???

Wow Rockandrollsteve to call this Saxons Back in black is high praise indeed.I think the album stayed British but with hint of Americain radio.Thats why i think it was the perfect Saxon album for the US market.I think it took me a while to get round to buying this. For some reason(cash) i didnt get it until after Crusader.I think because i new the key tracks so well the album tracks just sounded a bit weak.

I have to honk the horn so people can hear it. It should be recognized as the true classic that it is.Nine memorable songs, all very melodic and quite catchy. In my opinion they could never duplicate or create this style again.
Play it Loud. In case some of you forgot.

I'm sick of people saying our music is too loud
They never stop complaining, try to turn us down
But if you want it louder we'll turn it up full blast
They'll never stop the music they're living in the past

So if you need some action and nothing comes around
Don't call the doctor turn up the sound

Play it loud
In your neighbourhood

thanks valanx for the support and yes you understood me correctly, obviously i am a loyal and passionate saxon fan and have been since 1980
let me tell you a true tale to try and put into context what saxon are and always will be about
10 yrs ago i went to a saxon gig in bradford west yorkshire
it is only 20 miles from saxons home town, and it was supporting a really tight album in dogs of war so i bourght my tickets box office not wishing to risk dissapointment, anyways i went in and had a few drinks in the bar which was at the back of the theatre , the bell rang to say the band will be on in 5 mins so i drunk my bottle of newcastle brown in one and walked down the steps to the auditorium ,at the bottom of the steps there was an elderly woman ( not unlike the women who used to sell ice creams in the cinema) who was opening the doors for us to go through to the auditorium, she said something which made me cringe " this will be the death of this band " puzzled i walked through the doorway into the auditorium and to my utter disbelief there were 30 to 40 people , my heart sank as i walked to the front of the stage straight up to the railings !!! .......saxon had brought the full show ,drums on risers surrounded by skulls the whole shooting match (no eagle ,stage too small) on they came to "dogs of war" strobe lights dry ice the works...... after the first song biff stands at the front of the stage and looks beyond the crowd at the front of the stage in a mock gesture as if he was looking at a 75 000 crowd at donington then he looks down at the 40 or so people at the front and says
"there may not be many of you but we dont care , your our fans and were hear to make some fucking noise......straight into heavy metal thunder.....NOW THAT IS CLASS .......and if anyone from this forum was there at the bradford st georges hall in may 1995 drop me a line........and if that elderly woman reads this ....... fuck you lady saxon will never die
ps all the best for the festive season to one and all and see you in march on the lionheart part 3 tour

Thats a great story mate! And a perfect illustration of the passion Saxon hold for their fans and the great music they play so well, wish i had been there to see that!!

I was there on the front row!!
I even saw the support band, i was stood against the stage on my own, and the singer said "can you all step back a bit, this lad's gettin crushed down here" LOL. Do you remember the intoxicated bloke who got up on stage and put his arm around Biff (before he was carried away lol) ???:tickled: I was stood next to him
Good gig though
