Fuck that company and there shitty drives.

i've had nothing but good experiences with WD and seagate. Maxtors have given me the most trouble.

My housemate's WD Mybook just died after a paltry 2 years - and he just got another one to replace it! Some people never learn...

I use LaCie since 2000: I have four of them and they NEVER failed (I cross my fingers here, it sure could happen but never did).
I tell you more, I dropped from two feet high the little one (80 Gigabytes, the one with the 'Porsche design') twice and it still holds up very well.

I will never ever use LaCie again. We used a LaCie Biggest Disk RAID 5 System for our files of the "Exit Ghost" videoshoot and it broke down completely! A RAID 5!!! LaCie support was dumbfounded. It cost us 1500 Euros to have the data recovered (which apparently is a steal) ...

I didn't have a choice with this drive it was the OS drive and I didn't buy it (well) knowingly .

But I did buy a mybook in the past and had it never work.

Seagate for the win.

Well since people have seemed to have problems with Seagate as well (I've heard complaints beyond just the ones in this thread), is there any brand of hard drive (just the drive, not including an enclosure) worth considering? The only ones I know of are Seagate, WD, and Maxtor, and I've heard a fair share of complaints about all of them (though my Seagate external has been going strong for 3.5 years despite daily use and constant transport)

Ah man, this is the kinda stuff I hate to hear! I have a MyBook for backups and I had planned on buying a WD for my recording laptop this weekend...Now I'm not sure.

The only ones I've had trouble with have been Maxtors...I had planned on getting a WD scorpio this weekend to run sessions off and record audio to.

Hitachi and Fujitsu both make drives as well.

Oh yeah, and so does Toshiba, now that I think of it - I've only recently been made aware of the concept of buying an internal hard drive and a separate enclosure for it (such as the icydock, thanks James!), anyone have any recommendations for that? Cuz if I can get something that I know will be fast and reliable without paying 280 MOTHERFUCKING DOLLARS for a 250 GB Glyph (which is what I'm currently considering), then I'll be a happy man!

I've owned four WD MyBooks; one died in the first year, one in the second, and the remaining two have been giving me funny looks. WD Passports, on the other hand, have given me and my friends flawless, worry free service since their introduction.

This fall I'm trying out the arrangement below with a trio of bare WD 500gb SATA drives. So far so good.

There are only 2 types of hard drives ones that have failed and ones that are going to fail, regardless of brand. I've worked in IT shops and it doesn't matter the brand name, they ALL fail within time. You have platters that are spinning at 72000 RPM's constantly, eventually something is going to give.

Whatever brand you buy, back your crap up, and then some! Put OMF files onto CD's DVD's or DVD RAM, then have a second Hard drive for redunancy. It's the only safe way to always having access when it goes. If you don't then it's your fault!

I have had Maxtor and WD drives go on me, and my conclusion is nothing is really safer than anything else, if there is something moving inside it its got a chance of going. Just be prepared for the worst!

Notice how there is no trend in this thread, its like:

Fuck THAT brand, their drive failed on me - buy THIS one

and then the next post is fuck THIS brand and buy that other one.

Hmm, now I'm concerned. I bought a rather sizable WD drive for archival backups a few months ago. I've actually found it to be much quieter than the Seagate drives when seeking. Though I must admit, the Seagate drives have never really caused any issues for me.
