Ok guys, kind of important question here.
My bands first show coming up this Saturday. Busted out the Mark IV last practice and the thing had a/some microphonic tube(s) for the first time in 3-4 years, which I was surprised they lasted that long! It was a set of Groove Tube powers and Sovtek pre's.
Anyway, I hooked up to the 5150 as I was scared to hurt the Mark IV by running it with bad tubes. BUT - the Peavey also needs a retube. I'm going to get 2 retube kits. Thinking standard 6L6/EL34 for the Mark, and maybe just a standard matched quad for the 5150.
Anyone have any advice on tubes for deathmetal/metal/prog tones coming out of a 5150? I dont need any more gain than the amp delivers already.....should I just do standard JJ 6L6s? what for pre's? was thinking about the "dougs handpicked pre" set.....
anyone?
