Furia – Un Lac De Larmes Et De Sang
Adipocere Records – CDAR71 – April 2003
By Russell Garwood

Furia are an unusual symphonic death metal band, in which technical melodic riffage exists alongside dramatic symphonics and sporadic female vocals supplied by Akin’s Adeline. In contrast to Adeline’s singing are the growls of Damien Paquet and Mickael Vallesi, which are mid range death growls, while occasional spoken sections and strong singing introduce further variation. The guitars of Mickael (rhythm) and Sébastien Lobut (lead) are competent and melodic, blending with the bombastic orchestration yet creating numerous catchy hooks. Occasional solo work is also melodic and very energetic, while the powerful bass (Guillaume Mauceli) is varied. Médéric Moge’s drums sound triggered but are nevertheless skilfully played, flowing well with the music’s changing times and mood. This leaves the synths of Mehdi, which are proficiently performed, and always fitting despite the diverse sounds used. These include tubular bells, violins and harpsichord, keeping “Un Lac De Larmes Et De Sang” (A Lake Of Tears And Blood) interesting throughout.

Overall this is an excellent and unusual album, which fans of melodic death, symphonic/epic and progressive metal are likely to appreciate. The energetic, compelling music is well-performed, and has clear, balanced production, making for an accessible and highly enjoyable album.
