Gang vocals?

How should I monitor this though?Just crank my monitors??
Theres no lie going to be like twenty something people in this room next to where my computer and interface and monitors are tomorrow recording vox. I only have five pairs of phones and one ksm44.

Not to mention they are all going to be raging.

Have the group of ppl stand close to the mic 1-2ft and do the take,
then have the same group step back 3 steps(maybe even change position with the ppl) and record the same take live and over dub.....and maybe even have them step back again.....keep doing to taste....it really fills the gang vocal effect up

i approach it the same way i aproach guitars. get 3 or 4 people to stand a few feet back from the mic, then get another 3 or 4, repeat ect ect. then boucne it all down, and if it still sounds wimpy, or it could be better, add more takes to it. be careful with reverb though!!

quad track it, and move em round the room.
use omni or blumlein, and try and keep them as far away from the mics as possible.
and compress the shit out of it

I just get them to shout at a mic set to omni then double track it. If any one voice is louder than the others I get them to stand further back.

The hardest part is getting them to shout in time with the music and stop giggling.

it always sounds better when everyone does it at once. even if you have a condenser just set the monitors at the lowest level possible while still being able to hear them clearly enough to keep time. just record everyone at once. don't just double track that take. do a completely separate take and layer the 2 together. the different phases will make it sound like a stadium while double tracking just sounds like a chorusy gay effect and won't add any depth.

I suggest you to check out the special features from Waltari's Rare Species Alive DVD if you want to see how they've done it for many many many many times. Kärtsy apparently loves them :)
