Getting to the fest

My first PP was ProgPower III. It was actually luck that I started going to the fest-- we moved to the SE from Seattle in 2001, and when we met our next-door neighbors, found that they were metal fans and had just been to a fest in Atlanta (ProgPower II). The following year we were invited to go to the fest with them, and subsequent years, his wife stopped going and I inherited the 2nd gold badge...

We were (according to the captain) the last plane cleared for takeoff from O'Hare airport to Hartsfield during Hurricane Ivan. We were in a holding pattern on the runway for about 1 1/2 hours. Then 45 minutes from Hartfield we hit pitch black and turbulence that made the stewardesses and stewards scared. I lost my lunch 5 times that hour. Once we landed there was no walkway from the plane. We had to take the stairs at a 40 degree angle onto the runway and RUN to the gate in the pouring Hurricane rain. Took Metra to The Granada and got in the room. Spent the rest of the afternoon standing under the outside canopy watching the rain bands come in with Jon Oliva. What a cool ending to the story.

I was wondering when you would chime in. Still have the journal up? It was a great read.

Yep, it's at http://www.gregie.com/neil/adventures/ Ah, the days when the newness of it all (both to me, and my friends/family) made my bike trips a lot more interesting to read about! Coincidentally, I'll be doing a quickie (2 week) trip down the Atlantic coast, from New York City to Savannah, GA, in...September! I thought, can I work ProgPower into this trip for a second time?! Close, but no, we'll only be in the Outer Banks around that time. And now, let's all take a moment to hope Ivan is the only hurricane that ever affects ProgPower, or anyone who may be riding their bicycle in the region at the same time!
