Glorious Whoops!

The Civil War was fought in order to abolish slavery and to unite the north and south (at least thats what I was taught). But yeah, I hate how the confederate flag is considered to be a racist sign.

you'be suprised how many see the confederate flag as evil here too. Or at least a sign of racism. I get why it can be seen as that, but i see it as just having pride in your region. Nothing wrong with that at all.

This I.E. disc has got me "geeked" about history. Not just here, but World History. The history channel had this killer show on on the Huns last weekend, no two weekends ago. I could not stop watching. If you're gonna spend time on the idiot box, at least see something worth while. The Civil War's purpose was to "untite" the north & south. Good man.

The older I get the more interested I've become about history. I also watch allot of the History Ch and Discover. About the only thing I read thses days is music history based. Just finished a bio of Lester Bangs and am reading a book of his articles from Creem and other 70's mags at the moment.

For some reason I've been wanting to find a good book on the history of China.

Thanks for your vote of confidance JonnyD. I chose this book because it is very controversial. So if people are going to read it there will dissent for sure. This is not your grandpa's history. I can tell you. This is a love it or hate it book.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...002-3674971-7100064?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

It will shock you delight you but it will keep you reading and thinking about the subject :)

Man, this book looks very interesting! I'm not much into Civil War history (mainly because I've lived all my life in the part of the country that the war was fought in, you can't go 5 ft without bumping into some monument or plaque around here), but I may have to check that book out.

its important to know about your countrys history, its part of what we all are,and helps shape us and our thoughts towards others in the world.
funnily enough, history was my fave subject at school.if it wasnt for the bands and stuff,i was going to do a degree in history, and maybe have become a history teacher like hawk.
luckily, theres buggerloads of history in the uk.
that iced earth album does have a lot of historical references in it,and not just about the war of independance-i think at least one song talks about napoleon and his wars in europe.

Well, I don't know how old or young you are ;) but it may not be too late. I was 32 when I started studying history to become a teacher. Who knows what you decide one day.

Why not do both? You'll be amazed how loving metal can be an asset to a history teacher and being an history teacher can profit a metal musician :D

You can say that again and with mucho respect for the UK and the BBC. I try and see most of the BBC programs about history and get myself a BBC history magazine every month.

Just last Saturday I saw the last episode of that fantastic 60s documentary "The great war". I would love to have that one on DVD!! I can tell you. What a treasure that series is! I love the interviews with the survivors of WW I

Did you see those episodes?

Yep! And Blue Max is about the exploits of Herr von Richthofen AKA the Red Barron.

It's great to see a mix of two of my great passions; History and METAL!!

Great tread!

I haven't heard the I.E. album yet.

The South is still divided over the Confederate Flag.

j/k
Come on now, no jokes! We all know The 4th of July is when Jesse Jackson was born right?

If I'm not mistaken, wasnt the civil war about the south wanting to form their own country?

 That's what we call a professional deformation here in the Netherlands. Meaning that I can't help but be a teacher  and not even noticing it.

I would like to got to Gettysburg at some point. It would be a fuckin' kick.
This from a guy that's a second generation American. Damn, you got to know about the country that you live in. You got to vote if you have the right to do so.
I will be headed out to Washignton D.C. in March. Hope the snipers hold their fire.
I wanna get back. A trip like that wouldn't have been much interest a couple years back. Now I'm geeked about it. Yes, Mr. Johnny D those shows on the History Channel kicked some serious ass....
