GOATSNAKE features members of SUNN O))) and KYUSS so gee, I wonder why this promo was sent to me! This is heavy, this is soulful, and at the oh-so-metal price of $6.66, Trampled Under Hoof will find a home in many a stoner/doom collection.

The riffs are heavy, the vocals are slightly dark but very tuneful, and the rhythm section sounds shrouded in smoke. However, with 3 originals plus 2 covers, this is more of a sampler than a proper album, and as such isn't the greatest slab of stoner I've heard in recent memory. The songs have a hard time getting started, and once they do, just sort of cruise in neutral until they are over. I'm not saying the songs are bad, they just aren't great.

Nonetheless, this album succeeded in two ways for me. For starters I know to look into another GOATSNAKE release because I hear the potential of the band, and second, why I've gone my entire life so far without even hearing the name BLACK OAK ARKANSAS is beyond me.

You said it--solid but not entirely thrilling. This year's rerelease of their self titled/Dog Days would be a better purchase.
