Good affordable attenuator's?

So I think the THD "Hot plate" is out of my budget (unless one of you are willing to sell me yours used), but I'm looking at getting a 5150 or 6505 and need a 8ohm attenuator. Are there any other good suggestions? I see the cheap home made ones on ebay, but not sure if I should trust those or not, as I don't want to fry a new amp!

Any recommendations?

I have Greg's old Weber Mass 150. Love it. Has the lineout option.

Ideally I would like to have one that I could use for both recording direct into my interface so I can just use impulses with, or use it to lower the wattage so I can plug it into my Mesa 2x12 so I can record at a decent bedroom recording volume without having the cops called on me.
