OK now i recorded a drummer that was not very consistent on the drums. Double bass part snare hits gets weaker and just in quite a few place the velocity of hits hits really vary. I know shoot the drummer right:p

But i want to gate the snare to get rid of other drum bleed and I'm wondering any tips on how to even go about this cause i have had no luck yet but gating is new to me. Is there any luck or do you really need a consistent drummer to be able to gate stuff??

i would never gate a snare top mic 100%, since it fill give you full bleed on hits and 0 bleed when there are no hits. usually this results in loud hihats on snare hits. i would go for 5-10 db's reduction between the hits, that would save some bleed and keep the sound natural. also find a good key frequency for the gate so it opens on the softer hits too and doesn't open on highhats or toms. usually that would be around 600 Hz (the ring of the snare)

whats a good way to go about gain reduction on snare like that??

like what plugin and how??

If your using pro tools, they have the expander/gate dynamics 3 plug in. and one of the presets is snare expander...it's a good starting point.

you can download it off of the digidesign website for free.
