I actually often find myself liking the early stuff of a band the best. For example, listening to Opeth's Orchid right now and while I love the newer proggier stuff too, I'm starting to love this album the most. While the whole "OMG THE OLD STUFF IS TEH BEST!!1" viewpoint is often abused to an extent by elitists, it's always great and interesting to listen to the rawer, simpler demos of a band that might now be more polished, progressive, etc.

I love most Opeth albums as well, but I bought and listened to Orchid first and I would have to say that its my favorite.

Most songs off of first albums are good provided the band is worthwhile, so I'll be more kvlt and say...

The Aurora Veil is easily my favorite demo, all three songs on it are freaking awesome. I can't wait for when they finally release the debut album later this year.
