David Flaherty gave their "Wolf's Return" album a four star review in today's Mail entertainment liftout and I'm intrigued although I've never heard of the band. Recommended download-and-sample songs please?

I read it too. Sounded quite interesting.
But I must say I'm sick of him comparing everything to Kiske era Helloween..

After having given them a few more chances over the months, I have grown to dig some of the songs. I stand by calling them generic, but it is a welcome change to all the same-ish sounding melodic death and such that comes out these days. The clean vocals, simpler style music and moderate levels of tempo give off a Metallica/Pantera type vibe, which is something you don't get as much these days. Cool.

They are pretty simple, but they have a couple of songs I don't mind, just as a change of pace.

Similar to Satyricon's latest stuff. When I first heard K.I.N.G. I thought "you've got to be kidding me", but then it grew on me, and I heard an interview with Frost on full metal racket where he was saying that it is more original to do something stripped back than something extreme these days, and it kind of struck a chord with me.
