This place is dead so I thought I'd post this thing that I saw on Blabbermouth. Discuss.

According to U.K.'s Daily Mail, LED ZEPPELIN's Robert Plant has topped a poll of the greatest voices in rock organized by digital radio station Planet Rock. QUEEN's Freddie Mercury came second, Paul Rodgers of FREE came next while THE WHO frontman Roger Daltrey came fifth.

The only female voice on the list was that of Janis Joplin.

"The Greatest Voice in Rock Top 40" was compiled by the station's DJs, presenters and listeners, plus musicians, rock critics and experts such as Tony Iommi from BLACK SABBATH, Phil Manzanera from ROXY MUSIC, Ian Anderson from YES and LED ZEPPELIN biographer Mick Wall.

Planet Rock Programming Director Trevor White said: "It's great to see Britain has produced the top three greatest rock vocalists of all time."

would knock Axel down a fair few spots (or off the list), bring Janis up a lot, as well as put Glenn Hughes up near the top.

wonder what qualifies this list?
because a few people on it have technically awful voices but great stage presence and delivery.

There are some great voices, and some great showmen (-persons) on that list, but yeah Freddie was both and deserves his own list really. But apart from a few I think the top 20 is pretty ok.

Also Lynott is Irish and Neil Young is Canadian.

I'm not sure if most listeners to Planet Rock would have Barnes or Farnham spring to mind - nor the DJs. It's a very UK/American classic rock focused station.

Lynott was born in Birmingham, wasn't he? I'm very big on a person's nationality being where he/she was born. :) Yes, I'm looking at you Nicole Kidman.

so, all North American and from Uk and Ireland.

actualy thought that they would have some more Irish & Welsh singers on it but you tend to find a lot of them more in popular music than you do rock.

Planet Rock plays virtually no new music, and the small amount that they do play are new releases from classic rock legends. And certainly no popular music. Which isn't a criticism. :)

If you picked any country in the world and did that poll you'd get totally different answers - some common themes, but ultimately they'd all have a local slant. Over here John Farnham is known for one song, and I hadn't heard of Jimmy Barnes until I met Mark (and I know for a fact all my metal and rock lovin' mates have never heard of him). I don't think that's right or wrong, just understandable. :)
