Greetings. I am DarkFifl.

This is my first day on this message board for posting. Although I've been reading all week. I've been really impressed.

I am knew to the metal world. Although I've always listened to harder rock like Tool, Megadeath, Metallica (my like for metallica is falling fast), and Rammstien. Also some older bands like Boston and Kansas.

I was just in a Combat Zone with the U.S. Infantry. I can't say exactly where. But the whole time I was there, gunning in a humvee, my commander was blasting metal in the humvee. At first I wasn't used to the growling voices and it kind of annoyed me. I don't even know how he could hear the radio over it and the weapons fire. After awhile I started to get used to it and then one day he popped in an Opeth CD and I was like Holy shit this is amazing stuff. Over the next 2 months I began to love and get so into the music. What we did see of combat stopped mattering. My fears were gone and I could just do my job without really thinking. It was like focused rage.

Since we got back last week I have been searching all over the local music stores here in Germany. It is very limited since my base is out in the middle of no where but I've found a few Opeth CDs and a Therion CD. Its all I listen to anymore.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other bands that I should start listening to and hopefully I will be able to find them. I am so glad this new world has opened to me, I believe it saved my life.

Well, congratulations. With the regulars on the General DIscussion forum, you will have more recommendations than you will know what to do with. But before I give some recommendations, what kind of music would you be interested in hearing? Death? Black? Doom? The metal world is mighty big. You can go to either the UM review section or the "Your Reviews" section for some info.

EDIT: Most newer metal heads seem to start with the Swedish melodic death metal bands. It's not where I started but I can understand why so many people do start hear. It's very good stuff. You will, in no time, find out who these bands are.

Welcome to Ultimatemetal.

Here's a few bands you would often find in line with Opeth:

Katatonia
Dark Tranquility
Anathema

You might also check out:

Arch Enemy
Soilwork
In Flames
The Haunted

These all should be somewhat easy to find.

wow I didn't know there were so many different types of metal. I think I like the Melodic death so far.. If that is what Opeth is.

And thanks Npearce I will check those out!

Like I said, in no time you will find out who these bands are. Nathan has just named the most accessable ones and they are all fine bands. Dark Tranquillity is my favorite out of the ones named. Might I also add the band Dissection to that list. Dissection's 'Storm of the Lights Bane' is a fairly accessable album to a newer metal head. It is also one of the best metal albums of the 90's.

I have both of them, but not in the re-released digipak format. You will enjoy both of them. Did you hear that the Dissection singer(in jail until 2004) and Faust(Emperor's old drummer, in jail until 2003) are going to come together and form Dissection again? YES!

I recently read that. Even though I am not very familiar with Dissection, that makes me realize I have been missing out on a pretty important band.

Dreamlord: Do you ever check your inbox?

Darkfifl, welcome to the board. As they say over at the Blind Guardian forum, don't mind the blood here! ;)

Glad to see you survived your combat tour in one piece; it's always admirable to know that many such as yourself fight for what they believe in and a cause...

As for metal, you couldn't have picked a better genre of music to fall in love with! Dreamlord and some of the other zealots here have already pointed you in the right direction...so while you're learning/browsing, make sure to check the other forums here. They're chock full of people from around the world and ALL offer something to pique your interests (ok, well maybe not the Cannibal Corpse board  ). Have fun!

A corporal in my unit just got the new second Testament tape -- back in Ft. Belvoir the wx dropped to the low 0's during one op, he had this little tape deck with cheesy speakers, but man, that night in the bunker with 2 packs of smokes, a pint a piece of the Capt'n and the New Order, we were set. Should've got the boot for that one (among others).

I'd recommend newer Testament for you. You won't be dissapointed.

Here's a few tips of melodic death metal bands and albums ;)

Dismember - Hate campaign
At the gates - Terminal spirit disease
In flames - Lunar strain & Subterranean

All of these cd's can be ordered from nuclearblast.de

Hope that helps and welcome to the dark side!

So far I was able to find Testament and Dark Tranquility at the CD shop over in Amberg.

Great stuff! Hope to be able to find the rest of the suggestions. I am hesitent to order stuff online because it usualy takes about 5+ weeks to get to me =(

oh and keep the suggestions coming :D

So far I think I'm mostly into the Melodic Death metal

If you want a great CD to just get lost in, you should check out Green Carnation "Light of Day, Day of Darkness". It's one 60 plus minute song. It doesn't get boring, though. Trust me. It's also very melodic.
