growing & farming thread

totally badass, man. indoor growing setups are incredibly easy to construct and also incredibly rewarding. i have a small box like that in my house that is loaded with different culinary herbs. couldn't live without them

Co-worker got me hooked on farm fresh eggs. The difference between farm fresh and store bought pasteurized is night and day. Crack easier, cook better, taste like cotton candy out of a chicken's cloaca.

May take a hand at raising some chickens when im old and withered, seems like a half decent hobby. Also want to try my hand at beekeeping. I envy ye fuggs who live on a nice plot of land and have these pursuits at the ready.

yeah i have chickens (and bees), it's pretty easy and fun although if you think you're going to save money versus buying even the fancypantsiest organic eggs at the grocery store you're kidding yourself (you didn't mention cost but i'm just throwing it out there because there's a misconception among some folks that if you do something yourself it's always cheaper than buying it and that is empathically not true with eggz at least)

also our rooster is kind of an asshole and we might have to turn him into soup

By that stage in life, costs involved wouldnt raise a cunt hair. Figure the work involved would be rewarding enough to negate any egg related expenditures.

Biggest concern is protecting the little chicks against predation.

Post some pics of your hive n coop when ye can be arsed to do so brug.

I don't have chicken but my neighbour has (three of them, no rooster) and I'm basically the one feeding them, over the fence, mostly fresh endives and sunflower seeds. I swear every time they see me they run faster than if a fox was after them.

My father had a dozen hives but I couldn't carry on with those, being allergic...

yeah, we have a fenced off area outside the coop so they can be outside even when i'm not home etc. i got a chicken mesh fence that is folded down like half a meter on the outside and covered with soil so foxes etc won't try to dig below the fence, and then it's got a mesh roof as well (to protect against birds of prey). usually they get to roam free in the yard during the day though.

this is the coop before the chickens moved in and before we finished said fence, it's the only pic i have handy right now:

these are the chickens (we have 4 chickens and one rooster that are slightly mixed breed but mostly hedemorahöns, which is an old swedish heritage breed)

these are the beehives behind our house, they're just modular styrofoam boxes that you stack on top of each other in whatever configuration you want basically. i'm not that involved in the beekeeping, it's mostly the wife's thing. but i do enjoy the honey
