just as a sort of prelude to the real post: I ended up with a shecter guitar (800) and a cool amp (266). Both of which moose thumbed up.

POST NOW. I am fiddling. Right now I am going to work on gallop picking because I feel it is tremendously important, also some other things.
Any one want to suggest some good exercises?

so first before you go into galloping since you didn't play guitar before do this all over the neck of the guitar, it is a chromati click for alternate picking technique, which is very important to learn in the begining!!

you get the idea and do that SLOWLY, evenly, and on THE CLEAN CHANNEL and move up the neck and back. That should give you a work out. Make sure you are muting the strings you don't play on, and that you hold the guitar (fretting hand) correctly, and you pick down-up-down-up-etc. Ask Matt to show you the correct position.

Also learn how to change chords in the open position ( it is like country, but is good practice for noobs). Learn a E major/minor, A minor/major c minor/major chords and after you strum lets say E minor four time and then you switch to A major and strum for times etc, but its strum is even, and do it slowly in the begining.
Your picking hand should be near the bridge at all times.
P.S. I hate dropped tunnings.

yes, you saw the light. You should consider drop tunnings after you know your way on the guitar alittle imho.
if you want heavyness consider D standard. that is what i use

I agree, i'm also a huge fan of D standard tuning. It has the heaviness of dropped tuning without losing the E string for scale and chord progressions.

make sure that you are using at least .10s or .11 if you wanna tune down, howeve there is some pretty heavy stuff in E standard like metallica's and justice for all is in e standard. Also venom used e standard on black metal, sepultura on beneath the remanins and arise.
i just like D standard better. It is just more pissed off sounding and the solos seem to sound smoother. A record in d standard is sepultura's chaos ad. i can't think of any other now. the thing that should not be is in D standard
nevermore uses e flat.

Agreed, though I am using a 7 string now and like to stay in standard tuning with it.

As for learning suggestions, learn to read tabs. Both Power Tab and Guitar Pro are great programs, I wish I had access to them when I was starting out. If you've got any buddies who play, learn all you can from them, learning a good picking technique is important this early on, and it will be easier if you can observe someone else's picking hand. Once you start to get a feel for the guitar, move on to some easy songs. As much as I dislike the it now, the Black album is good beginner's stuff. Learning a few basic scale patterns (and getting a feel for how certain scales sound) will be useful, especially for building fret hand dexterity. Learn octaves as well, they will help you feel out the fretboard down the line.

If you use either of the tab programs I mentioned earlier, you can adjust the playback to match whatever tuning you're in, although I definitely suggest sticking with standard intervals (I use D standard personally). Learning to play on drop D (and it's variants) will most likely make you lazy, you need to get used to using all of your fingers (don't neglect that pinky!).

Yeah, all of Death's stuff is in D. Some of Kreator's albums are in D, all of Vader's albums before Revelations is in D, Behemoth's Thelema.6 and Satannica (not 1005 on that one) are in D, Dies Irae is in D... That's all I can think of at the moment.

Like I said, Penguin got a Schecter C-1 Blackjack.

He won't be able to tell you that though. He knows nothing about guitars. All he will be able to tell you is that his guitar is black and makes very rumbly noises when turned up loud.
