i think he should stick to chord changes and 1-2-3-4 on every string shit for now.
anyway, penguin if you are going to try that, make sure you do it SLOWLY

As long as he works on things slowly, and builds up his speed things will be fine. None of those exercises are overly complex. Shit those were 2 of the 1st exercises i ever got, They did me good. it got me to think about more complex stuff at the begining without being overy compicated on the left hand.

Its all 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 other than he galloping thing which is 0 3 1 3 ...believe me if penguin is galloping already he will get these down in no time

I can kind of do all those exercises, it is just not very good, haha

that galloping one is a bitch, though (since my gallops need work)

BUT HOLY FUCK IS WHERE EAGLES DARE FUN

and...what makes the guitar great and powerful is it's ability to mimic the nuance of the human voice through bends and slides so try to work on that too. After you...

At this infantile stage, ignore this man.

hey penguin, i came up with this solo passage that you should practice really slow that will help you develop quite a few technique like legatto, sweeping and string skipping. At all times mute the strings you are not playing on with your picking hand. It will take you a few months to get this to a medium speed correctly. I would start with practicing it on the clean channel. it is in d standard tunning, you can play it on any tunning you want, since it doesnot involve the lowest string. It is based on D locrian mode aka 2 minor mode. (i hope i got the mode right), but don't worry, just practice it along with the chromatic lick i showed you and whatever matt shows you and guru tabbed out. that should give you a workout that will require alcohol at the end of the practice session:h=hammer on p=pullof s=slide. About the timming i'll post a recording of it so you get an idea of the timming, next week sometime.

Im pretty sure most, if not every Death album is in d standard, which is why i first started tuning down to it a few years ago!

Yes all Death, Angel Corpse, Sinister, early Behemoth....I think, Immortal's Son's of Northern Darkness, a few Exodus songs, can find quite a few more I am sure. :)

"i think he should stick to chord changes and 1-2-3-4 on every string shit for now."

I did jump a head of stuff like this a bit when I started to learn and I've done well. :)

Anyone want to tell me if a metronome is a good investment?

YES. You can get a good digital one for like 10 bucks, every music store sells them. When you get one, your first goal should be to learn how to maintain a steady beat. The 1-2-3-4 pattern is a pretty good way to do that. Start as slow as you need to and make sure every note is clean.

i wouldnt recommend a metronome. get some software and program your metronome yourself. this is cheaper + i always had the problem that i could barely hear digital metronomes and the sound they make is annoying as hell. with the software you can also (later when you get better) programm more complicated beats while a metronome is very limited ...

I've never had this problem. Then again I usually practice in my bedroom so I never crank up the volume on my amp that much. Also I wouldn't say that software is cheaper...Unless you rip it or something. ;)
