Guitar Necks

What do you guys prefer ? Neck Thru- or- Bolt On

Bolt on for me. Its said that a neck thru has better sustain but I really havent encountered that and if the neck is damaged, the whole guitar isn't ruined. It's also much less expensive.

Set neck Out of the two you listed, I like neck thru more. No real reason other than my favourite guitars have either been neck thru or set neck.

Set neck, even if only for the fact that they are generally easier to handle on the higher frets. Nothing worse than that block of wood cock-blocking your left hand when going for high solos.

I`m prefer neckthru to bolt-on. Not have set neck guitar, but thinking on it for next guitar.

I prefer the kneck to go through the entire body. Set kneck next fallowed by bolt on.

I'm sorry but the whole "if you break the neck you loose the guitar" argument against neck-through doesn't make any sense. How many players do you know who so abuse their guitars that they have broken a neck? For me neck-through is the best for pure playability. A well built and designed guitar will sound great regardless of the neck/body construction method.

Set neck or neck through. All else (pickups, wood, etc.) being equal, I find the tone and playabilty of set necks and neck throughs to be superior. I agree that the whole "break the neck lose the guitar" thing is BS. Ease of repair is definitely after tone and playabilty on my list of what I look for in a guitar. As for bolt on's being cheaper, this is generally true, but not always. A good US made Strat is way more expensive than say an ESP LTD Eclipse. For metal I'd take the LTD every time. That's just my preference though - other people have gotten great results with bolt neck guitars.

I have couple guitars that are set neck and a one that is through. Both types can sound good. I think through neck guitars sound a bit fuller on the low end. But this is most pronounced when playing bluesy type stuff.

I wouldn't recommend worrying to much about it. If your comparing two guitars to buy one of them, just jam on them both and make your choice independent of the neck type.

There's one 'k' in 'neck', and it goes at the end... I know you're usually a little loose with spelling, but you're just getting the word weird now...

I prefer set for playing and bolt for anything I'll be spending enough time with to need to service... ever.

I used to swear by neck-thru with 24 frets, but then I fell in love with a bolt-on guitar w/22.

If the axe calls to you in the dead of night like a siren on the rocks, it really doesn't matter. Cheap, expensive, ugly, pretty...I don't turn any down until I give 'em a test drive.
