Set neck or neck through. All else (pickups, wood, etc.) being equal, I find the tone and playabilty of set necks and neck throughs to be superior. I agree that the whole "break the neck lose the guitar" thing is BS. Ease of repair is definitely after tone and playabilty on my list of what I look for in a guitar. As for bolt on's being cheaper, this is generally true, but not always. A good US made Strat is way more expensive than say an ESP LTD Eclipse. For metal I'd take the LTD every time. That's just my preference though - other people have gotten great results with bolt neck guitars.
