Hey guys, I know a lot of you around here use Guitar Pro, but I've never really paid much attention seeing as I primarily play drums.
But looking at their website, I now see the possibilities with regards to online collaborations etc. (ie. I could technically write stuff I cannot play but get others to perform the tracks/solos/whatever for me).
Anyone care to share their stories on how they use Guitar Pro and their experiences with it in general?
Thanks in advance!

Niall.

I use gutiar pro for all my stuff (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and other arrangements). I also make tabs quite often. I find it to be a great program despite its bugs.

Before programming drums I write them in GP.

Someone brought it over saying he couldn't get it installed on his mac (he just needed an upgrade) so he was going to sell it to me (but I showed him he just needed an upgrade). So out of curiosity I installed it and downloaded a GP file with everything (drums, bass, guitars etc...).

I don't like it. It came off my computer really quick. I would like it better if you could route the midi engine to stand alone instruments or you could run virtual instruments right in the program because it sounded like shit.

It's basic GM, it's not meant to sound good. It's for getting ideas down/tabbing out songs for other people. I use it to write shit on guitar, or to make a note of riffs, so I can remember what they sound like, along with having a tab of how I played the riff. Then I can add drums to it to get ideas and shiz, all within one program.

I use it. As some have said, it's great for quickly writing your ideas down. The bassist in my band uses it to create all our songs, and it has worked very well for us.

It does sound like shit, but I like to write stuff with it and when it's actually played with virtual instruments or a real band, your tunes sound better than ever :) feels good man

Thanks. Care to elaborate as to what some of these bugs are?
Sometimes I get some weird error in French and I have to save my stuff, close and open again the program. And for some reason I have some delay during fast parts sometimes (like double bass at 200 bpm)

Oh, by the way. Now it comes with RSE ("real sound engine"). To me, it's s piece of shit. I don't use it, I just use the standard general midi for playback

Lasse, you can also export the midi from guitar pro into your HD and apply whatever software instruments you would want to it.

I use powertab, works great for me and the other guitar player in my band (lives in another town) to work on songs. Plus you can export a midi file with tempo and time signature data and drop it into your DAW for click tracks when recording :)

There is a really bad memory leak if you use RSE (realistic sound engine). I do prefer how it sounds to midi but I leave it off now because it eats up virtual memory if i leave an instance of GP up too long or I have too many instances open at once.

If you don't want to pay anything try Tuxguitar. It's basically the same as Guitar Pro but for free. the only thing that I don't like about TUXGUITAR is that it doesn't have an option to start the metronom like 2 bars before the song begins. That bothers me if i wanna play along with the file.
anyway here's the link if anyone is interested.

This is what I use as well - great that it can open all the other popular formats and it's open source.

I use it for all song writing. It allows you to clearly see and hear how your songs are written. can help make judgment on how things flow or if they sound crap together.

Also is great if your in a band cause then everyone knows how the songs go and where all the parts before band prac so no time spent redoing/restructing the song just go in and play cause everyone should know there parts now.

Definatley saves time when it comes to recording cause no one can argue "no I play this part here" cause you can open up GP and bingo theres the complete song as it should be.

I write all my drums in GP aswell so i just ahve to load that into PT 8 and run Superior.

Do you guys know an easy way to rearrange a song in GP without having to copy/paste? Click and drag.. or something

By rearrange I mean moving a section without having to copy, paste and add bars..
